data back up

hi all,

 

One of the small companies I look after have a server with currently about 500/600GB of Data on RAID disks.

 

It is backing up to a server in the same building but that is hitting capacity. Also if the building burns down they are screwed.

 

I have been looking at Amazon Cloud for backing up my data.

 

The site has a 10MB up & down fibre connection. Am I best just uploading this lot to them on a nightly, incremental back up so I have an off-site BU?

 

I just need a cheap off-site BU for DR.

You can't upload that to them daily 600GB on 10Mb? (Assuming it's 10Mb not 10MB) Will take 5-6 days to complete.

 

How much data is changing per day in regards to incrementals?

yeah I said incremental so only changes, but I need to get the data up there in the first instance too!

 

Data changing daily would only be a GB or two!

Aye incrementals on a seed would work ok, but I'd have to ask how you plan to re-do any large backups. I mean for example we generally re-run a full either weekly or at least monthly.

 

If you're just using a single seed with incrementals any one blip in your chain and you'd lose the lot. So would be worth having a set time when you're uploading a bunch (Now where't thats say 150GB over a weekend each weekend etc or something? Rather than one full 600GB at once)

I guess my logic with that would be questions like -

 

a) Do they need internet/remote access while these backups run? e.g. If they're hosting a website internally will your backup knock it offline when you do it.

b) How important is the data in terms of things being changed often? Would having lets say a weekly full be enough or do they actually need daily?

c) Do they need months of backups or just one off-site copy "in-case" if they're backing up locally still could the off-site just be used for worst case?

d) When are the on-site backups running and how often? Again in terms of congestion/lockouts etc

 

If for example you only need 1 offsite backup over a month, I'd highly suggest at looking at alternative options. With the low internet speed and data size etc, you could easily just have 3-4 External drives you rotate around, one on-site, 3 off etc (Assuming your visits are regular?)

a) I'd prefer the BU to run out of hours

b) daily would be ideal but maybe possible to live with a week as its for DR only

c) again, only for DR (the BU is going on someone else's server locally at the moment - its complicated but that server is now at capacity ideally the other guys want some space back!)

d) weekly full and daily incremental

 

I need the data backed up in case a fire, a virus such as ransomeware, all disks blow up, etc. I don't visit the site and ideally want it fully automated so I don't have to!

We had cloud backup at a previous place with 5-6Mb/s uplink. Approx. 250GB backing up over a Friday would be very lucky if it finished for Monday. They had to restore a full backup jus before I joined them and had to meet the guy halfway up the motorway with a USB drive.

Just done a clear out of the server - the only data I need to back up is about 160GB!

Still you're thinking along the right lines - One full backup (say on a Friday) and incrementals Mon-Thur is how I generally do things.
