[sims] Windows Server + SQL 2016

Has anyone tired SIMS on Windows Server 2016 and/or SQL 2016. We have a school that is on a very old server running Windows 2012 (not R2) and SQL 2012 and they are wanting to replace the server. Capita doesn't officially support Server 2016 until Spring next year and SQL 2016 until summer next year but the school are saying they want to use them anyway. Evidence of it working or not would be helpful to see how hard I need to work at either delaying their upgrade or getting them to go for Server 2012 R2 and SQL 2014.

Considering the very long service lifespans for Windows versions, I'd still advise against this on a production SIMS server. Server 2012 (and R2) have many years of support left, and they are great OSs (R2 more so!) If something goes wrong, an your configuration isn't supported, you risk getting into a deep smelly pit. It'd probably be fine, but can you risk it?

Is it just a SIMS server? If it is, in terms of the OS. Its about half a day to reinstall with Win2012 R2. SQL Server is a lot or difficult. Like recovering data from a failed raid array hard, do-able, but not easy.

Spring next year isn't a million miles away, so I'd suggest either waiting or going for 2012 R2 and SQL 2014 today which are working configurations.

 

I'm pretty sure someone else on Edugeek has already tested a VM running SIMS on Server 2016 and it doesn't work.
