BKGarry Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 I have just discovered, tucked away in a store room, and old CISCO Catalyst switch, which has 48 GB ports. I really want to utilise this switch but I have no idea where to start, I have been fumbling my way through CISCO ios config with our main switches but not done anything amazing. I am just wondering, is there a way I can copy the VLAN config from my current switches onto this one without having to do it manually? Once I have the VLANS on, I can configure all the ports to my hearts content but I was hoping to be able to not have to program all of this switch manually with the VLANs.
Davit2005 Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Do a capture of running or startup config to a txt file. HyperTerminal or putty can be used. Once you have corrected the config needed for the vlans in the text file jus paste it into the new switch at the CLI level. 1

Do a capture of running or startup config to a txt file. HyperTerminal or putty can be used. Once you have corrected the config needed for the vlans in the text file jus paste it into the new switch at the CLI level. If VTP is setup this may not work. If we had a running configuration of the core and this "new" switch it would help. 1

Good call, I doubt if you are running VTP but check as you will need to change a few things on the switch you are about to implement otherwise it the vLAN config will get overidden. Davit2005 Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Are you in Priveleged mode i.e. type en to change to a # prompt you may need a password or reset the switch as you probably wont lose much. It is poss to do a password reset on most cisco's without losing the config. 1

FN-GM Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 You do have VTP enabled, so a config restore won't work. However that "new" switch cannot be upgraded to IOS. I would just dump it if I was you. Its very old and doesn't support newer versions on spanning tree your core is using, this may cause a few issues. 1

Davit2005 Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 I picked up a C3750G for £150 and managed to get IP Services K9 image on from another switch. There are certainly some bargains out there.
