Server 2008 to 2012/16 swing - how do you do it?

Ok, I have got a problem.

 

Server installed perfectly, as soon as I added Hyper V via server manager and the server rebooted, it went onto an endless bootup process. It just does this for hours and hours and never changes...

 

I assumed it could have been a one off fault, so I re-formatted, re-raided in raid 5 and went back through the HP provisioning to install Server 2016 Data Center. Again, it worked like a dream, but as soon as I installed Hyper V, it went back to the same problem as above with the screenshot.

What could be the problem here?

 

The server is an HP ProLiant DL320e Gen8 v2

The only thing I noticed during setup which caused me slight concern was that Server 2016 was not listed in the provisioning drop down, so I selected the next best thing.

 

P.S. I don't know why my images are showing upside down. They are the correct way round on my system

Are you installing full-fat Server 2016 and then adding Hyper V? (it sounds like it from that sentence). You'd be better installing Server Core with Hyper V, or Hyper V Server (less overhead as there's no GUi, etc): https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/hyper-v-server-docs/hyper-v-server-2016

Willing to bet its because your using the HP provisioning to do the Windows install yes?

I always install outside of the HP provisioning and then install HP provisioning afterwards for management as last time I tried (2+ years) ago it was flaky as hell but installing the OS normally and then adding the provisioning tool afterwards as a software install worked a charm.

 

Side question - You using Server 2016 for install? If so check http://h20566.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c05301994, these release notes show support for Server 2016 so may need to update your provisioning chip (or whatever its called now, ILO isn't it as they piggy backed the 2 together?) software.

Ok that is interesting. When I first ran the install, I visited the HP page for this server, and ensured I ran all of the updates (that would run).

 

It would seem they have not helped as this time round, same problem.

 

Maybe I should just install directly onto the HDD without using the provisioning as you suggest?

In new gen HP servers the provisioning tool for HP which use to be simple boot CD's (or USB if you wanted to be fancy) is now replaced by them integrating the technology into the ILO chip (ILO used for remoting the server from direct at hardware level) which means firmware updates as you need to update the software on the chip (think BIOS and BIOS flashing) which wont be included in any updates, flashing the ILO requires a special utility which I believe involved booting into the ILO and then an option in there to upgrade from a firmware file (someone correct me if i'm wrong...).

 

Due to Server 2016 being new and not shown in your list you are definitely not running the latest firmware version of ILO.

 

Update your ILO for best practice (if you can be assed, I like stating best practises, do I follow them? when I get the chance ) or just install OS and then download the latest HP provisioning software and install that to cover the server and ILO management along with drivers (which Server 2016 has all of them anyway...).

More than happy to update the iLo. Will take a look tomorrow and see if I can be done. I hate having out of date stuff, all it does is causes future problems! Do you think I should be able to do it via the iLO integrated website for the hardware?

Pass i'm afraid, none of my servers have provisioning built into the ILO as they are gen 7 and the provisioning ILO integration happened at gen 8 upwards. I've installed Gen 8's and 9's but the ILO firmware supported Server 2012 R2 at the time.

Should be fine for a standard new server setup. It can get a bit problematic if you need to start editing security configs (long story short, I wanted to turn password complexity off, and it was a royal pain!). Although, again, I haven't attempted it on Server 2016 as yet.

Bad news... installed without intelligent provisioning.

Installed well with no problems. But again, once I installed Hyper-V, it stalls at bootup.

 

iLO is showing the firmware version as:

No didn't do Windows update as it wanted to restart whilst installing Hyper-V.

Didn't actually check Dev Man.

Ok try this.

 

Do another wipe + install of Server 2016 manually.

 

Go to Drivers & Software for HP ProLiant DL320e Gen8 v2 Server - HPE Support Center. via the server and download the latest SUM (Software Update Manager) and then install and run that to make sure everything gets updated properly, there are also online BIOS and ILO flash tools if you want to update those too.

This will probably all need reboots.

Once done and running SUM shows no more updates then activate the Hyper-V role and see how it goes.

Your server is definately supported for Server 2016 all versions going by the HP matrix so try a BIOS and ILO flash along with SUM after a standard install.

 

If still no joy after this then its got to be something in the BIOS missing a setting.

 

Also i know it sounds silly but it could be the ISO your installing 2016 from too. You doing so via bootable USB?
