O365 and OneDrive as main storage?

We have the traditional Exch 2010 and file server onsite.

 

I'm looking at the option of moving into O365 for full staff and student email services and using OneDrive for student storage.

 

Does anyone have any recommendations on something similar they do and how it works? Ive never used either.

I am also looking very into the same solution. Any planning guide....would be beneficial... What is the total space on one drive and can we buy extra space if required?

From what I've seen and read so far, O365 and Microsoft Classroom is totally free and offers 1TB OneDrive space per user....

I'd happily do this here but nobody has ever satisfactorily explained the rules surrounding personally identifiable information being held out there in O365 (don't start me on staff anonymising stuff 'cos they don't and the SLT haven't got a clue about it either so are not inclined to enforce it) or given me any real method of providing granular backups which are cost effective enough for the amount of data we have kicking around.

If you live solely in Microsoft Office and run Office 2013 or above you can do OneDrive as primary storage without too much pain. It's working with 3rd party programs that becomes difficult as you either have to buy iamcloud (and move to their platform for provisioning etc.) or users have to save locally then upload to OneDrive via the web interface. Sync is a non-starter for many of us due to students using shared machines so beware of that too.

Hi, just so you know, you don't need to use IAM Cloud's identity & access platform to use Cloud Drive Mapper (our OneDrive/SharePoint drive mapping tool). You can use Cloud Drive Mapper alongside Dirsync & ADFS absolutely fine. It's just that most our customers elect to get rid of ADFS/Dirsync because they'd rather IAM Cloud handle that for them for no additional cost, and they can save themselves money and hassle running & managing a redundant identity provisioning and federation services.

Indeed, that's what I'm doing on my test machine now, it's a shame it can't SSO off our existing provider now we know we can't run DirSync alongside iamcloud's hosted ADFS replacement.

 

Even then be careful with larger files too, takes time to get them up to OneDrive using the WebDAV protocol these mapping tools use. Was hoping for the native API version which was meant to speed things up but seems to have gone quiet on that front?
