Haptic Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 Hi All Hopefully your Friday is relatively pain free (unlike some of us making radical changes to the website in a hurried fashion!) Anyhoo, Google have decided to rename their Apps For Education and Apps for Work offering as : G Suite / G Suite for Education. We initially thought of Snoop Dogg's favourite hotel, chuckled, then got over it. As we are fully fledged Google For Education/Work Partners we've clearly had our work cut out this morning. Here's a link to the news post, there's a link to Google's own blog there too. What are your thoughts on the new handle? Joe
kmount Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 Reckon they did it for the G-Men to feel comfortable? 1
flyinghaggis Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 Personally I think it sounds tacky, naff and very generic. G-Suite sounds like a low-rent 90's Microsoft Office alternative IMO! I think they'd be better to use the name Google rather than abbreviate it to 'G'! Also, I dislike describing it as a 'suite'. It sounds too narrow in it's focus given what Google offers with their cloud platform. Google Apps sounded better. Why not go with Google Cloud, Google Portal or something along those lines? I guess it's just a name and the apps will remain the same so ultimately there's no impact but I don't get why they'd rebrand it to that? I'm sure they have their reasons though 2
sparkeh Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 Sounds terrible. Like they are trying to go all gangsta or something? 1
Haptic Posted September 30, 2016 Author Posted September 30, 2016 The Jamiroquai lyric of "...this love we have of useless twisting, of a new technology..." springs to mind. We liked it as it was, however one must always move with the times! Joe
6Foot2 Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 Link: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/cloud-services/175128-official-google-cloud-blog-all-together-now-introducing-g-suite.html From the blog: ...We created Google Apps for Work ten years ago (back when it was Google Apps for Your Domain) to do just that — to help people everywhere work and innovate together, so businesses can move faster and go bigger. And today, we’re introducing a new name that better reflects this mission: G Suite...
elsiegee40 Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 (edited) Reminds me of popular 1970s furniture - G Plan anyone? EDIT They're still in business apparently! http://www.gplan.co.uk/ We had something like this Edited September 30, 2016 by elsiegee40
6Foot2 Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 Reminds me of popular 1970s furniture - G Plan anyone?.. Yup. There was one at home when I was growing up. Similar to, but not the same as, the one below: http://www.anecdotesdesign.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/GPLANDrinks_sideboard_open_300-640x400.jpg
biz Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 Reminds me of popular 1970s furniture - G Plan anyone? My Mum had a three piece G (plan) Suite - very comfortable it was too.
XiJ Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 Wonder if they've done it because of the apple 'app store' and people associating apps with that. I preferred google apps to be honest. Seemed a perfect, and simple name.
Mr_Jiminy Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 The mods will probably frown on this, so apologies in advance. I'm sure the new name will hit the spot... 1
elsiegee40 Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 I think we had better draw a veil over this thread before it derails further!
