Thought my shower pump had finally given up and was spewing water everywhere! Serves me right for not checking it last night. I got the voucher too. Annoyed I can't use it on hardware. I could do with another Chromecast. Going to see if someone will swap me.

arwen Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 (edited) So, first day with the phone. I'm really enjoying it. Feels nice in the hand, slightly on the large side for me but then I do have small hands. The upper glass bit on the rear actually helps with grip when you are holding it. Your fingers grip the glass better than the metal lower bit. The design is growing on me. I never disliked it at first, but it is distinctive from the rear. From the front it looks like most other phones. I'm not too sure about the camera. I've uploaded some to flickr - Pixel photos The camera is a little too soft for my liking, and noisy in low light situations. I could be being picky however. I've been playing around with the slow-mo video tonight, using my ever patient test subject ZaZu - Video is somthing I've never really done before, so I'm no expert in it. apart from the lack of focus at point, I find it a rather cool feature. All in I find the phone very quick, almost like it knows what I am going to press before I actually press it. Thankfully, Google Assistant has a sense of humour too! Arthur Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 (edited) If anyone has a Pixel phone from EE (like @hardtailstar) or Verizon in the US, it is now possible to unlock the bootloader using a tool called dePixel8. This might not be the case for much longer so if you want to do it you had better be quick. www.androidpolice.com/2016/10/28/unlock-bootloader-pixel-phones-verizon-ee-depixel8-beaups-jcase-hurry/ If you ended up buying one of these developer-unfriendly models, you might be looking for a way to restore their full range of function, and now you can. Justin Case (jcase) and beaups, possibly best known for their Sunshine unlock service, have discovered a method to force the Pixel's bootloader into an unlockable state, allowing it to be treated just like the models sold direct from Google. They've developed a free tool called dePixel8 that makes the process quick and fairly straight-forward. Full instructions and a download link are available on theroot.ninja site, but the steps basically involve copying the dePixel8 tool over to your Pixel, changing its permissions to be executable, and then running it. The device will restart to the bootloader where fastboot can be used to issue the oem unlock command. Just like a normal unlock, the user data partition will have to be wiped. It's important to note that the method used by dePixel8 to enable unlocking will surely be fixed soon, most likely with the November security patches, due out on the 7th (first Monday of the month). In other words, if you want to unlock your Pixel, do it sooner rather than later because this tool may not be an option after the next update. I mentioned yesterday that we previously heard Google Pixel would bring ‘waterproofing,’ a feature we’re now told is “still on the table.” We’re also now being told, however, that Google is once again focusing intensely on the camera with Pixel 2, that the device is currently being tested with improved chipsets from two different manufacturers, and that it will bring a higher price. Finally, the same source says Google has lately been testing lower-end Pixel devices which would bring lesser specs and a much lower price tag.

I don't think Google understands how bad it looks when you sell a £600 handset then stop OS updates for it 2 years later. I can let it slide on a £250 Nexus phone but when they start charging double I expect to keep the device longer and no OS updates really irks me. This fact alone would stop me buying a pixel at their current prices TBH as they supposedly have the same 2 year OS update terms. I think I'll probably switch back to Apple after my Nexus 5x stops receiving updates unless this situation changes Edited January 31, 2017 by flyinghaggis

Google has no plans for future laptops, future of Andromeda OS uncertain The Chromebook Pixel 2013 was the first product to bear the Pixel brand, showcasing the potential of Chrome OS on high-end hardware. Two years later, the Pixel 2 was released as one of the first consumer products with USB Type-C ports. But it looks like there won't be a third Chromebook Pixel, or any future Google laptop for that matter. TechCrunch reports that a meeting took place between journalists and Google's senior vice president for hardware, Rick Osterloh, at MWC in which he confirmed the end of the Pixel laptop line. "Google hasn’t backed away from laptops. We have the number two market share in the U.S. and U.K.," Osterloh said, "but we have no plans for Google-branded laptops." The Pixel 3 was going to be more than just a new Chromebook, it was likely going to be the first laptop with Andromeda - Google's combination of Chrome OS and Android. It's unclear now exactly when we can expect to see the first hardware with that OS, but it won't be on a laptop from Google. The Chromebook Pixel's discontinuation makes sense, considering Google has helped advertise Samsung Chromebook Plus and Pro as the best Chrome OS device on the market, much in the same way the Pixel was. The 2015 Pixel was discontinued last August, but as of the time of writing, the Pixel C tablet remains on sale.

Heck, if I buy one around 6 months from now it might not even get a years worth of OS version updates! Maybe it's just me? Given some phone networks are offering 24 month contracts I would expect the phone to still being updated during that time frame. Not that it's an issue for me, I have a cheap monthly rolling sim and bought a cheap phone on Amazon.
