UPS functions - what do I need??

Hi all

 

We need to get a UPS for the server here - it is a single tower type thingy (HP ML330) but I was wondering what features I should have. As it is a Primary it is no disaster if the server goes down in a power cut and has to be restarted - but obviously I would like it to shut down properly rather than just having the power taken away rudely

 

I haven't looked at UPS system for many years but I seem to remember working with one that communicated with the server and would shut it down it there was no mains power and less than x% battery left - is this normal?? - cos other wise if the power goes off on Friday night it will eventually run out of battery well before I notice on Monday morning

 

Any other feature that may be needed?? (bear in mind that the Head keeps muttering about budgets this year so I need to keep thing cheap)

Hi Mike,

 

If it's a single server then most basic UPS functionality will run over a USB/serial cable no problem.

 

As they get bigger / higher end for multiple servers and other equipment you tend to use a network management system with it connected into the network (ensuring the network is also connected!)..

 

I'd imagine in your case a pretty entry level end APC unit would be ideal - it includes the powerchute management software that you install on your server and set it up.

 

Do you know how big your power supplies are in the ML330, even better if you have the iLo configured it can tell you the power draw so you can calculate the run time from each size of UPS to decide what fits.

Thanks - haven't really played with the HP Management thingy but it looks like iLo is configured

 

Where about can I find the Power draw??
