Hi,

 

Can someone tell me how they have setup UAC on their staff/pupils accounts. Its doing my head in at present, its prompting for permission when I try and delete a driver now. (dont mention printers to me)

My admin access is weird too which i saw in Windows 7 but ended up disabling UAC altogether. When I try and copy a file from a mapped drive it says the source isnt availble which I thought was cos its running as the administrator account... the unc path route works fine

I just started running Win10 on a computer lab this school year and ended up disabling UAC altogether. Had issues with mapped drives being mapped under user credentials, go to run an installer off that drive, get prompted for UAC elevation and then the installer can't find its source files. Have had other problems with printer drivers as well - especially printers with built-in control apps like multifunction copiers.

 

No adverse affects yet with the exception that Edge won't work. If you try and run it it'll explicitly say that it needs UAC enabled in order to function. Nothing of value lost... Chrome is our default browser and if you really need to you can drop an icon on the desktop pointing to IE11 (yes, it's still there).

That is really easy to fix. You just need to add the following registry value...

 

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"EnableLinkedConnections"=dword:00000001

 

I keep UAC enabled on all of our PCs.

There is a specific GPO to elevate permissions for printer installs. If you need this I can post it later for you.

Depends how far you want to go with UAC. We have it set so we dont see it at all. See this for the setup. http://prajwaldesai.com/disable-user-account-control-using-group-policy/

 

Also look at this article is you disable UAC. Ive seen these errors in most of my machines whilst trying to troubleshoot the blackscreen issue after login.

I sorted it, I ended up disabling it like I had in W7.

 

Seems to have solved a few issues for me too.

The *only* issue i find with disabling it is sometimes when the tick box for run as administrator on EXEs is ticked, it doesnt make a blind bit of difference, take ID Manager for instance, but thats for another thread.

Disabling UAC should be considered a temporary work around, not a solution.

Had it disabled for years with W7, I used a locked down GP with software restrictions, bitlocker, decent AV settings

 

But I ignore most best practises.
