Net Send nd general messenger type scripts.

I have been playing with Net SEnd script, trying to send messages to users desktops while they are logged on, but it does not seem to work.

Some one told me to check that the mesenger service was turned on on the GPO (or domain GPO) that the computer/user was in. I have no idea what this means and have tried to look in the GPO but have had no luck.

DOes this service have to be on to use net send and other message type scripts and if so can someone explain a little more to me and tell me whe e to look please.

The Messenger service is turned off by default on XP SP2 and Server 2003 SP1. You can re-enable the service using a GPO - it's under services or something in the computer settings part of the GPO IIRC.

I hav efound the service.....what do you recommend the settings to be?

If i change it to 'automatic' i get prompted to add users/groups If i want to send messages say with net send who should be in this security policy? Domain admins or just the user who need to send messages around the network to pc's?

I was going to check for you but it seems I have been too efficient and completely removed the messenger service from my RIS installs :?
