Unique Learner Number - not entirely dissimilar to UPN.

I don't suppose anyone has records containing data and UPN for students who have left.

I was thinking that too, and indeed thought that was why they were introduced?! That said, I'm not surprised that another Government "Good Idea" requires another unique number for the students.

 

I don't suppose anyone has records containing data and UPN for students who have left.

 

As I understand it, this new Managing Information Across Partners scheme only applies to students who are currently under 14 years old, i.e. it isn't going to be retrospectively introduced for our current or former pupils.

 

It is interesting timing for the Government to announce a new centrally-held database of personal information though - you'd think they would wait for people to forget about the recent NHS, child benefit or DVLA losses first...

Nick, I understood that UPN's were introduced to enable correlation of information at various stages of a pupil's education so that group statistics could be produced i.e. to ensure that the correct data was put together. It was NOT intended to be used for tracking identified individual pupils - a practice that was viewed with suspicion. Mission creep is taking place.

 

Now the previously unacceptable is being introduced with a new identifier.

That might be the auspices under which it was introduced, but the UPN is used to track individual pupils - things like Midyis, Yellis and Alis track progression of individual pupils from Key Stages 3 to 5, and I'm sure there are other things for earlier stages - so how exactly is this Unique Learner Number going to be different?

No doubt disks containing it will get left in the back of a taxi or posted to the wrong address soon enough, then we'll all have access to it :-)
