I am increasingly finding this enfuriating as there are plenty of legit ways of using p2p and these ways tend to be for large multi-gigabyte files. Ive only got a 2mb connection at home so im getting sick of saturating my connection all the time to d/l things for work. Im sorry but i dont know how the RBC block this traffc; whether its by port or other method such as diffserv rules. And ebviously they arnt gunna tell me. So im not reallly explecting too much here but; is there any way to get it through which i may not have thought of? Only thing ive tried is the inbuilt encryption of the torrent client. Cheers

srochford Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 I'm intrigued to know what you're downloading that's so big and needs to be downloaded so frequently. The only big stuff I download comes from the MS site - there are some DVD images which are in the gigabyte range but they have very fat pipes to download through so we just download direct from their site (we have a 10Mbit connection to Janet and saturate that with an MS download so I've never felt the need to look at P2P for things like that)

I know mandriva seems to like bittorrent if you are downloading the free version, but the pay for version allows use of ftp/http

I like to try new things all the time, and as we are straped for cash, if it wasnt for me doing that we really would still be stuck in the dark ages. My latest venture was to see if there is anything useful for the kids on the vmware community sicen 99% of them probably dont even know there are alternatives to MS I dont see why i should kill my families connection when there is a perfectly good 100mb one sat doing nothing all night every night. srochford Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 If the stuff you want is available from a web link but you're just not there in the evening, can you shcedule a task to fetch it (eg using wget)? that would mean that stuff gets downloaded for you overnight. As an example, I think the Debian DVDs are on the UK Mirror Service (http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp.debian.org/debian-cd/current/i386/iso-dvd/) If you can't schedule it, can you get remote access to a workstation or server so that you can kick off the download when you're at home but using the school's connection?

I was pointing out that you only need to download a single 12MB network install disc (not the dozen 650Mb images), which can be mounted and then the rest downloaded via HTTP when you install it. It should mean that you download significantly less too, as you more than likely don't use all 8GB of packages...
