Creating Alias Email Addresses for Bulk Users in Google Admin Console

Please could you helppp?

I work in a school and we are trying to rename bulk student emails. We have changed our school name so our email addresses needs to be changed. We created an alias email address but not sure how to change this after the @username email address.

We have been looking into the GAM Tool (Please see source: GAM by Dito - Google for Work Premier Partner | Google Apps - Google Maps Reseller) but dont know where to start.

 

Please could you advise on how we can alter this as a bulk process. We are trying to avoid to change each student's email alias manually. Thanks.

How far have you got with GAM?

Firstly are you trying to change your login domain? If so you can't - you'd have to migrate to a new google apps account based on the new domain.

 

Secondly, how have you created your accounts in the past - does your google apps synchronise with an active directory for example?

Assuming you have just added a sub-domain to your GAFE setup and want to change users account names to the domain name you have added then in GAM do something like:

 

gam csv listofusers.csv gam update user ~oldusername username ~newusername

 

gam csv listofusers.csv gam delete alias ~oldusername

 

Where listofusers.csv has two columns headed oldusername and newusername and lists all the users you want to change the username for. The second command will remove the old username from being an alias.

not really related but a bit of a heads up: when you upload the CSV you get an option to force users to change their password, if you tick it (as I did), it actually forces password changes on your entire domain, not just the updated accounts. That was a real painful lesson for me, as we'd setup some accounts with static passwords for things like iPads and what not (and of course, by default it forces you to use a different password to the last one you used).

I'm just doing this in Google as our school has changed it's name so we need to change our email addresses from @oldname.co.uk to @newname.org.uk

Once you know what to do it's ok but you can do it all using the Google API.

 

First you need to change your primary domain name and then you need to rename all users (in bulk via script).

 

Please let me know if this is still causing you issues and if so I'll give you instructions etc :-)

If you've got them already written up I am sure some members will find it useful (there's a chance I might actually) with lots of schools moving to academy status and changing names.
