Optimise Drives not running on schedule

Hi,

 

I've recently noticed that all my server disks are not optimizing on the scheduled frequency set in the Optimizer tool GUI. I've analysed these and they are heavily fragmented so does need to be run as far as I can tell. I ran this manually thinking that maybe a manual run needed to be kicked off initially but doesn't look to have helped as I'm over a week after and the last run timestamp hasn't updated to a more recent date since.

 

The Windows Task Scheduler shows that the last run of the defrag job as 03:41 this morning and with a result of 0x0 which is a successful run but this is not reflecting in the Optimize Drives tool and regardless of this timestamp, isn't running anyway as the drives are showing as fragmented again.

 

These are VMs on a VMware infrastructure but as far as I was aware, Optimizing is still required as far as the OS is concerned!?

 

It's worth mentioning that when clicking the Choose drives button, only "Select all" is shown. All other drives do not appear here but I've been told that this is a cosmetic issue but have a feeling this is all related.

Interestingly I've seen this recently too as VSC has intermittent errors and this may be a cause.

Physical Server2012r2 with RM CC4.5

Drive c: around 27% fragmented although it's supposed to be scheduled. Manual run has fixed it but I'm curious what is happening.

you can defrag them according to vmware, though I was under the impression that you wouldn't ordinarily look to do it depending what backup solution you use, as they can generate a lot of writes and excess data use in the backups, if done regularly on a schedule (though someone may correct me if I am wrong here)

Well I've had some clarification that a defrag is still worth running in a virtual environment only if it's causing performance degradation and by default the schedule runs an optimisation, not a file-level defrag which requires the additional -d switch.

 

This is fine however doesn't explain why the schedule isn't running.
