Morning,

 

It is increasing getting on my nerves.

 

We have all social media things blocked for students and staff. My PC as admin does have access for emergencies.

 

I am constantly and increasingly getting asked to allow access for students to facebook, instagram etc by the safeguarding team so the students can sort out their little spats, remove inappropriate pics they taken of themselves, delete the latest fight video etc.

 

Given that most of these students are below 13 so should not have social media accounts, I just wanted opinions on whether you report the accounts you know to be under age.

Technically yes. In practice it's up to your safeguarding team. From their point of view, better the account they know about than a new one that they don't know probably.

 

Worth a discussion with your Designated Safeguarding Lead (the one the buck stops with) in case they're not fully aware of the scale of the actions of the pastoral staff.

Report it to the safeguarding lead, leave them to decide whether to report it to Facebook, etc.

 

To make your life easier though, why not allow your safeguarding team to access these sites themselves?

Should the very worst happen though I would end up in a coroners court being asked "did you do all that you could to prevent the death" Currently and in all honesty I would have to say "no".

 

Im my previous employment i was in the coroners dock being asked the same question over a death of someone i hardly knew. Trust me i felt guilty as hell. its something i would never want to repeat.

 

Its the safeguarding team that always bring the students to me :-(. I have tried to get them to do it, allowing social media through the web filtering to their PC's. But they end up calling me anyway.

 

Think i'm going to push back harder to the safeguarding team and refuse to do it. As i say i'm not going in the dock again.
