Hi,

I've set up my own minecraft server for the pupil at my school. They're all going crazy and wanted mods to be added. Does anyone know how to add mods to a LAN server? I surfed the web and nothing is coming up?

Hope you can help

Thanks

It depends on what platform your hosting the server on but usually you just need to download the required mod files and then run the modded version of the jar file which executes the server. It's better that you start a modded server from scratch since it will cause less issues with compatibility but you can also try injecting mods yourself with the mod loader. How to Run a Simple Local Minecraft Server (With and Without Mods)

There's a few things to consider.

1. Modded Minecraft is a *lot* heavier on resources. The pack I'm running at home at the moment uses 8GB RAM alone on single player. Sure, there are lighter packs but its still something to take into account.

2. Use a pre-made modpack, don't build your own. People spend months working out the bugs in released modpacks. You won't be able to be as thorough. Look at Feed the Beast and ATLauncher, as both have a long list of modpacks ready to go - you just download the server zip and set it up.

3. Modded servers mean modded clients - so clients will need the client version of any mod or modpack you run. Easiest to do with a launcher as mentioned in number 2.

There is also "server side mods" such as using CraftBukkit. This changes the server-side only, but the mods are much more limited as they make changes to how things happen server side only. So no tech or magic etc... More role playing and data manipulation.

I might be wrong but I think the Edu version is completely separate from standard. Unless it has changed minecraftedu only gives you a licence to run a minecraftedu server and however many client licenses you have (not standard minecraft). Therefore you wont be able to use any of the modded minecraft launchers (AT, FTB, etc) which need a standard minecraft account to run.

Assuming you are running the server yourself (you did say LAN server) you can mod it and the clients but it will be a pain. Once you start adding more than 1 mod you will start running into conflicts and performance issues. A lot of mods give users ways to accidentally crash the server (mainly by automatically generating thousands of entities) and permanently corrupt chunks so it will take a lot more admin work to keep things running.

If you aren't running the server and don't have direct access to the files then you will need to contact your server host and ask them to do it for you. This makes life even more difficult.

Short version:

It's possible but I really wouldn't unless you are only going to use a couple of mods or you want to spend a lot of time on it.
