W10 upload image to SCCM, error 0x80220014 (WinPE initialization error)

Hi

Ok, so have installed W10 on a VM and removed AppxPackages so that it will sysprep. I now want to capture that image up to our SCCM server, however after it syspreps and then reboots, when it restarts 'initializing hardware devices' I then get the error message 'WinPE initialization failed with error code 0x80220014'.

 

I have made sure that my W10 ADK is the latest version and have also installed the hotfix kb3143760 from MS and followed as per https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3143760 but still having issues.

Have also tried as per https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/configmgrteam/2015/11/20/issue-with-the-windows-adk-for-windows-10-version-1511/ where they recommend as an alternative to use the older version of the ADK, and still no luck.

 

I'm hoping others have had this issue and have managed to resolve, and can shed some light on it for me. Then I can stop banging my head against the wall.

I had the exact same error and the KB3143760 is what fixes it. Make sure you follow the instructions to the letter or it wont work.

 

If you follow the instructions correctly, the first things it does is copy you boot image to your c: driver. The it mounts it . It then talks you through updating a file within the boot image and then finally it un-mounts the boot image.

 

After un-mounting the boot image you must then copy the boot image file from the c: drive to where it is stored within your sccm installation (mine is in the SMS_XXX\osd\boot\x64\ folder) and then within the SCCM console you need to right-click the boot image and update the distribution point.

Many thanks for your post but it didn't work for me.

My boss setup SCCM on a different drive to C: (E: ), so not sure if that is affecting it.

It saves the winpe.wim files to C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment, and from there I have copied them over to the appropriate share on the E: drive and then pointed to there for my Boot Image files but still it fails.

He's back on Monday so we'll sit down and have a good look as he's knowledge is a bit better than mine.

 

If you have any other thoughts I'd be grateful.

That might be where WinPE puts it's own files, but the files that SCCM uses are in a place of SCCMs choosing. In the SCCM admin console right-click on the boot files, get the properties of them which will tell you the location of the files you need to use.
