All Users Alias

Morning all,

 

I've a little question, which I'm sure won't be too difficult to solve. As you may be aware I'm relatively new to the OS X environment. I'm currently building our second image of our iMac's.

 

I would like an Alias that connects to a Network Drive Share on all users desktops that login on the iMac's. Is this possible? How do I do it?

Paul how are your macs setup ie Directory Services?

do they pull workgroup prefs down from a mac server?

 

if so, you can use workgroup manager to add an alias to the dock.

(happy to tell u how if needed)

mount the drive by using the go --> connect to and or how you normally connect to your shared drive.

Once you have the share mounted on the desktop do a ctrl and click ( right click ) on the share and click on

 

create alias

 

that will create an alias on the desktop so you can double click on that to re mount it.

 

If you want it to logon then you can ( whilst logged in as the user do the same ) and then open system prefs --> accounts --> there should be a login tab or section where you can drag and drop either the share or the alias of the share.

 

This should then mount the share each time that one user logs in.

 

Not sure if this is the best way as I know there are other ways ( would be good to see torledo and the likes posting to see how they would do this )

@gaz350 - Yep they're pulling down prefs from workgroup manager I believe - I'll check this. Thanks!

 

@gecko - I have it working for my administration account, likewise for everyone I have shown how to create an Alias for. I would like this automated for everyone, due to endless requests!

I've checked it out, now I notice that there is the user account of the admin in the workgroup manager. That's it, I take this is because all other users are authenticated via AD.

 

How would I manage the dock of all these users?

 

My understanding is I change the preferences on the 'Guest Computers'. Is this correct?

this si what you need to manage in your setup as you cant actually manage AD Users on a per user basis

 

something like the 1st image

and then you can see how i setup the dock options in the 2nd image.

 

Reason we dont use the tick box for Add Group Folder is that we found it used to hang the clients at login so manually added them.

Applications folder is actually a folder with a bunch of Aliases in to provide a clean apps folder.

Interestingly there are no groups, nor AD users. Only admin_mac which is our Mac Administration account.

Yes, but to manage some of the preferences you need to add them to a mac group as you can't manage the user level preferences without extending AD.

 

You need to create a new group in workgroup manager (give it a similar name to your AD one but it can't be the same). Then you can simply add the AD group to this. This then means you can manage preferences for AD groups when they login to OS X, such as adding their home folder to the dock.

if not then you'll need to be using Workgroup manager on a client that has access to both AD + OD to setup the Managed Groups

Looks like the folk before me have done half a job here obviously. Do you have any documents on setting up/ensuring the Mac server is setup with AD?

 

When trying to add an AD group in Workgroup Manager it finds nothing under ActiveDirectory/AllDomains.

although this is for 10.5 i dont think its changed much. there used to also be a guide some where talking about how user/group/computer prefs override each other not sure if its in this manual or not, but worth a read.

to answer your last post:

If its not setup to see AD its not a problem

my OD Master isn't setup to see AD

 

just run Workgroup manager from a client that sits on both OD + AD

Ok - I have installed Server Tools onto my 'admin client'. Open WGM, select the globe, and select Other, Active Directory and then All Domains.

 

I then receive the following error:

 

"Got unexpected error"

 

"Error of type eDSCannotAccessSession (- 14006) on line 3181 of /SourceCache/ServerManagerApp/ServerManagerApp-230.2.51/PMMUGMainView.mm"

 

When I've managed to get /Active Directory/All Domains it says "Not authenticated". When selecting the pad lock and entering AD domain credentials it fails authentication, along with all other AD and Mac OS X Server account credentials.

 

Have you seen this before?
