Finnish employees of Microsoft Mobile Phones business have been invited to the Microsoft Headquarters in Finland for an internal event. It's expected that there will be news on the faltering smartphone business with the Lumia line of products.

 

According to sources Microsoft is stopping the design and manufacturing of smartphones. The event starts at 12:00 EEST at the Espoo Arena. Just last week the company sold the feature phone business

 

The exact details of the announcement are not yet clear, but it is known that business has not been doing well since Microsoft bought it from Nokia at the price of 5.5 Billion Euro. Just this week Gartner informed that the global marketshare of the phones had dropped to less then a percent of the smartphone market...

Whelp, that will be me going back to Apple then. I would rather have a phone and software designed by the same company... that way I knew who to blame.

"My understanding is that Windows 10 will go on as an operating system, but there will be no more phones made by Microsoft," said a union representative.

A statement issued by Microsoft's chief executive did not make clear if this was indeed the case.

 

"We will continue to innovate across devices and on our cloud services across all mobile platforms," said Satya Nadella.

 

The company has promised to provide more information when it posts an earnings update in July.

 

 

So the door at the moment is left open whether or not they will be making any phones in the future, hopefully we will get more information in July.

Doesn't seem they really expanded on that then. Though their lack of faith in their business, and lack of implementation of porting apps has pushed me to look at the competition.

Ah, light at the end of the tunnel. Sounds like my Lumia 550 is going to be a collectors item of the future then at present its away being repaired as less than 6 months old it developed multiple faults including an inability to hold a charge for more than half a day with all Apps switched off! Using its predecessor the 520 again now which is ironic as I upgraded because I was having to charge that one too frequently I felt!
