MS Power BI

Hi All

 

Just had a look at the power BI (free version) and thinking of setting it up for our school as a data analysis tools for subject leaders and SLT instead of my current system of exporting data onto excel from SIMS. I also think it has lots of potential and more flexible compared to buying a package such as 4matrix.

 

I just want to find out if other schools are using it and for advise if you are using Power BI

I've had a fiddle, manage to do some interesting analysis on our Facebook page.

 

I'd also sit down with someone in SMT that has a data head and find out what they actually want to know, what do they want to get out of it. It is much easier to go in with a plan rather than just poking around. Bearing that in mind, it is also interesting to do some off the wall analysis. I was at a conference where they were talking about this and the company showed some college data that showed which departments were costing the school the most, but also that if you dropped the course that was costing the most and not paying its way that the knock on affect could really damage the college due to secondary courses then being dropped. They also showed that Y7 was costing more than Y8 due to SMT being drafted in to do more Y7 lessons.

 

That conference example was a massive project though, they linked their MIS, their finance and their payroll. Was very interesting what you could find just playing around.

Just picked up on this thread, as I've been tinkering with Power Bi in school and have produced some interesting for Cover Analysis and Behaviour/Attendance monitoring, but wondered if anyone had managed to do anything interesting for academic progress - levels or grades?

 

Also wonderd if anyone was interested in sharing the dashboards there have created, as I'm trying to decide on a set-up to share with other school leaders within my school?
