Regarding LTSB:

Long-Term Servicing Branch. For critical or specialized devices (for example, operation of factory floor machinery, point-of-sale systems, automated teller machines), the Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) provides a version of Windows 10 Enterprise that receives no new features, while continuing to be supported with security and other updates for a long time. (Note that the Long-Term Servicing Branch is a separate Windows 10 Enterprise image, with many in-box apps, including Microsoft Edge, Cortana, and Windows Store, removed.)

You're creating work for your self further down the line. Why not manage the OS & it's updates properly and reap the benefits later on?

You are creating work for yourself not using LTSB. Good luck with all your big updates every 9 months that reinstall half of the OS

managed properly :)

WSUS/SCCM sorts that problem out nicely. We've been running Win10 CB since it was available for both students and staff without any issues :p

You still have an impending deadline though. When CB stops being supported, and therefore you're forced to update to the newer version. That time is much lower than LTSB, and the update is the equivalent of a new OS each time.

Will SCCM magically get laptops out of trolleys and from people houses so you can update them?

Even with SCCM (something I have used for years), not using LTSB will create loads of work.

Not to mention, the updates take quite a while to run! My PC at home is pretty fast, SSD OS drive etc... The last Windows 10 release update took it an hour to complete.

Spread that across an entire IT estate and that's a lot of time.

I accept there's a deadline, but so far it hasn't caused us a problem. Staff accept that during holidays they will be pulling updates from us and to expect this since they rely on their laptops during term time, and we have time set aside to pull laptops out of trolleys or WOL our desktops for this, so again it's mitigated any problems with updates happening during school time. Maintenance schedules in SCCM gives us as lot of flexibility as to how our updates are applied.

Care to elaborate?

You can still hold back updates using SCCM just as you can with previous versions of Windows, there's no reason for me to approve build updates until half terms/holidays.

Exactly. And remember we are only small fry. What about companies that have tens of thousands of machines, imagine that!

But thats creating work for yourself?? Something you said using LTSB will do :confused::confused:

Maybe I'm just used to it, we've always pulled laptop out of trolleys for maintenance regularly! I see reimaging trolleys of laptops a lot more time consuming than a 2 minute look over for issues/login for updates!

I know of a relatively large org. that's currently deploying Windows 10 en masse (>20,000 employees) using self-service who are on CB, so it can't be that bad!

After weeks of messing around trying to make this "Education" version fit for purpose I'm giving up. Enterprise LTSB is going to be our route for the moment. We dont have to mess around with all the bloatware, cortana rubbish or anything like that.It can safely be rolled out and if anything changes with the "Education" version in the future and it becomes fit for purpose then we can roll that out and because LTSB will be deployed already it shouldn't be an issue with having to update constantly.

im not sure cortana IS rubbish in fact im not sure it should be disabled as in theory at least it does make using a pc easier esp for kids who have trouble using mouse/keyboard as they can just use a mic and ask it things. As it uses bing as its backend in theory it should be no worse than actually using bing to search

Yeah, I read that it took around that amount of time - Plus it reinstalled all the metro apps the guy had removed from his builds. Yuck! Reimaging yearly or so with the latest LTSB takes much less time.

I've gone LTSB. There are a few things that need to be added back into it or enabled but it's small fry compared the initial work to remove all the gubbins from the standard build, to say nothing of the subsequent work when new versions come along.

L-T-S

L-T-S-B-OK!

Yup... a classroom full of kids shouting commands at their PCs sounds like a great idea... :D

Really interested to find out about this, i too have played around with windows 10 education edition and its a complete joke really, not designed for a locked down school environment at all.

Its nice to hear LTSB might actually be of use here, I for one have never cared about new features on an operating system and nor do most of our users. They just want it to work well and stable in our environment running Sims ect.

Does anyone know if it will be updated for things like the new start menu design in the latest fast ring? I think it would be wierd having different GUI elements in different versions of windows 10.

Certainly an interesting development!

LTSB with Classic start Menu will be our next OS deployment here.

Judging by the comments on here, why didn't MS produce an Education that was actually designed for education? And I mean all education (Unis/colleges included!) as we (and a lot of businesses) want the same thing, a simple deployable OS without bloat or toys that most people wouldn't even use at home!

Microsoft are trying to shape the future, rather than providing what customers are used to and want I think.

It will do in the next major LTSB release, but from what I understand will require a traditional in-place upgrade/reinstall as/when Microsoft release new versions.

I still stand by my LTSB is a no go statement!

As mentioned previously, there are few, if any, scenarios where an organization would use the Long-Term Servicing Branch for every PC – or even for a majority of them.
