Not the first time this has happened I think. Personally, I suspect the hire company of being fed up with wrecked mortarboards

 

When I graduated I didn't get to wear a mortarboard. In those days female graduates of Lancaster Uni wore a sort of square beret thing. Only the male graduates wore mortarboards. It's changed now. My daughter wore a mortarboard at her graduation from the same university

Here's a great opportunity for this year's graduates to think up a new tradition instead - everyone else does motarboard-throwing, time to think up a new activity.
