newpersn Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 How easy is it to sort out the start menu to redirect to a network share? I'm about to start work on a Win10 GPO for pupils and i would like to use Windows Start menu and not Classic shell or anything else. Thanks in advance.
dblight Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 Not the same bit similar a startup scripts copy our start menu to a local folder and then folder redirection looks at that folder. We also remove all programs from the start menu however a gotcha I'm trying to resolve is if you specify an xml for a start menu layout it doesn't work as the folder redirection happens after the Xml is loaded this meaning the start menu is stripped again! [emoji22] Not sure this is of any use to you but something to look out for.

Solves the issue

Solves the issue That might work for him... not fore me.. Cant get the start menu to redirect at all... (or the desktop.) To my knowledge, the XML only configures the tiles/'pinned apps' layout. The Start Menu itself must be redirected in policy (User Configuration, Policies, Windows Settings, Folder Redirection) Make sure that "Grant the user exclusive rights.." (settings tab) is unchecked.

We have redirected start menu with windows 7 ( share on file server & used GPO to redirect the menu) and it works great and also working fine with windows 10 PCs but when we add new shortcuts ( link ) they don't appear on Windows 10 PCs but they do appear in Windows 7. Any help with this?
5nowman Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Did you get any further with this? Windows 10: I got start menu redirection working however it only shows icons not folders I create! Really odd. networkshare\startmenu$ ... put chrome shortcut in there and it shows on teachers logins If I create a folder it does not. Works fine with windows 7. Hopefully someone can help or suggest what they are doing with their start menu folders. as with windows 7. I don't want APP data redirected.. just the start menu
ComboSmith Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 networkshare\startmenu$ ... put chrome shortcut in there and it shows on teachers logins If I create a folder it does not. In startmenu$ everything should be in a folder called "Programs" and then you can create everything in that folder including other folders. The folders can only go one level deep
