Hi,

Im trying to get Blender (2.77a) installed on a Microsoft network. The problem the tech team has had is that once installed it doesn't obey group policies (it's an .exe, not a .msi) and students can access the whole network and C: drive through the load/save interfaces. Is there a way to get Blender to obey group settings or another way to let it run and save only to a students home drive.

Thanks

Hi,

We have blender running on our network, I have tested on our version and the way to set it to autosave to the student's network area is by changing the run in option on the shortcut to the Drive letter, network location or folder location that has been set up for redirecting to student documents. Also, what do you mean by .exe and not .msi is this the installer or the program? As for the issue with showing local drives and network location they will only be able to save in the locations that have been set up to have the students save to. Hope this helps.

Thanks Drayke,

Sorry my mistake Blender only as an exe from the blender foundation and a exe. I thought that msi worked better on windows networks, but it obviously doesnt!

If they can browse the network drives, does this allow them to read the files in the network drives? I don't have access to the install myself to test this unfortunately.

And, I see you are UK based and at a school that uses blender, you might be interested in the 3Dami.org free summer school

Thanks Drayke,

only if the network security is mis-configured.

Deploy Blender with the /S switch for a silent install.

Blender will (like all Windows apps) honour any permissions you've set. So long as your shares are appropriately secured, you shouldn't have any problems.
