Deploy printers by Orgainizational Units

How do you deploy printers to OU's. I got problems with the VB's not running and i would like to move away from it.

 

Any help will be great full

I don't have much to do with Printing here (something I can delegate away from me so I try to as much as possible) but my less lucky junior colleague just sticks the printers in a gpo - Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Deployed Printers / Printer Connections and then just attaches the required printer gpo to the required ou.

Turns out we also use a user script to add the followme and default printers so this might be less helpful than I thought

We stopped using scripts a while ago. We now use GPP with item level targeting:

Create a new Group Policy and then go to User Configuration > Control Panel Settings > Printers

 

Right click in the right-hand pane and click on New and then add the shared network printer.

 

If you're assigning this to a Computer OU then you'll need to enable the 'Configure user Group Policy loopback processing mode'.

Got it working. The test computer i got next to me now has 70% of the printers applied to it..

 

Is there a way i can just pull a few printers to the computer rather than all of them?

When creating a new print queue in Group Policy we get the following screen:

 

 

We have all our print queues as 'Update'

That's the item level targeting. For those machines that need a printer, but not an OU to themselves, I create a security group for each printer. I add the machines that need the printer to the security group, and then use Item Level targeting to deploy the printer to "computers in the security group xxx"

 

Further, the gpp preferences GPO first deletes all printers, then adds the relevant one - otherwise user accounts carry the printers around from machine to machine.

are you trying to deploy to users or pcs. Ive found gpp is more reliable to users so I use loopback processing to apply user settings to a pc if I need to do printers per pc rather than per user

Want want to do is if a computer is in a certin OU then this printer is applyied and default. (with 1 or 2 others as backups).

I got targeting but it's still adding most the printers and I've noticed it's not installing the drivers.

 

The printer I'm trying to add won't add as it's missing a driver.

Assuming the printer driver is attached to the printer on the server, there's a User policy to allow driver installation.

You use item level targeting to only add the printers to the appropriate OU. In the example I linked to, I delete all existing printers as the first action to get rid of any "old" links.

We apply OU/Computer/User targets as applicable to each printer when creating the queue, or when we add a new client for the printer.

 

Is this what you mean, or have I misread your question?

We've got it working by (Computer) OU, so it can be made to work. (e.g. all the machines up one end of the school get the relevant printer).

This may not/probably isn't the "official" way, but it seems to work.

 

Set up GPO much as your example, but I've got "Create" as a second "Update" pass then sets the default printers by using targeting. (Not sure if it makes a difference as long as the "setting default" pass is processed after the printer is added. Take a look at this picture in the link I posted to get an idea of what I mean.

 

 

Security settings are like this:

 

 

(this is the bit I'm dubious about - possibly would be better as Authenticated Users?)

 

The GPO look like this:

 

 

This does this:

 

 

 

1. Delete all shared printers (gets rid of any historical links)
   
2. Add Lower School Copier to all machines
   
3. Set LSC as default for all computers in Lower School
   
4. Add Upper School Copier to all machines
   
5. Set USC as default in Upper School and ICT Suite
   
6. Add Office printer to all Office machines
   
7. Add Office Copier to all Office machines and sets as default for them
