There is multiplayer, but I'm currently playing single player vs AI.

Ah lovely thanks :) Will have to have a look at the weekend! Sounds a good game, just tired of games where you don't play for a week and then suddenly you're ganked by everyone with higher gear/tech than you haha

I think I've messed up. I declared a race a rival, and they appear to have tech'ed up a lot quicker than I have, so they have gone from equals to being overwhelmingly stronger. They've then formed an alliance with both the other races blocking my way along the spiral arm of the galaxy... So, I find myself trapped!

You'll have to crush them then. Don't worry this is how Empires are formed. Nobody will remember there used to be other races in that region of space ;)

I'm growing my navy a lot at the moment. I've put military platforms all along their border too, in preparation of war.

Started a new game last night. Played for an hour and achieved more in that time than the 5 hours of the first game. This morning I defeated my first enemy in battle and now control their home planet. :D

Played it at the weekend, have to say it comes close to being that galactica 2 game I loved. Although just lacking the tactical combat mode that even Orion has.. put these two games together and you do have the game I've wanted for so long.

Still I can see me putting 100 hours in this game.. and that's probably the same game too.

I've reached the point where my expansion has been halted by 5 different civilizations. I'm allied with two, neutral trading with two others and direct rivals with another. Not sure yet if I'm brave enough to initiate a war with the rival, I've fortified the frontier between our systems and have fleets ready, but with little or no intel on their capabilities it's a bit of a stab in the dark if I choose to attack them. I'll make a decision over lunch. I do so want to try out my new Destroyers though :)

A neighbouring empire declared war on me, and promptly attacked with 6 fleets. I was obliterated in seconds, as they went straight to my homeworld.

Haven't actually lost the war yet, but I have no minerals to build more ships to fight back, so the end is nigh.

I had started a second playthrough and got really far. Decided it was time to start taking care of the competition and declared war on the closest rival. Flew in my fleet of 8K military powers worth of destroyers and swept through their systems destroying everything. Went to claim their planets and... apparently I need ground troops... why did nobody tell me there was ground troops, why can't I just nuke the site from orbit, just to be sure.

While I was faffing trying to figure how the hell I get ground troops they counter attacked with another empires ships helping them and wiped out most of my fleet.

Fun times :)

Was this in your first game or the one you just started again?

The second one. I don't really know how I could have done it any different to be honest. I simply couldn't get enough mineral production. Had every mineral planet tapped in my empire too. Could only get enough together to build a fleet with 1k strength. Plus 3 defense platforms.

Tech up the better mining networks and mineral processing can help a lot (and these techs should pop up fairly early on in the game). Most of my mineral production comes from buildings on colonised planets, also using the edict that gives +10% production can be a nice boost early on. Colonise any world that is at least 60% habitable, even if it is already within your influence as then you can have more buildings. Set up some planets with just mining networks and 1 mineral processing and keep the production edict running on them constantly. Look out for governors that give increased production. If your ok with slaves they can also get a 10% production increase as well

Edit: Also if you are tight on resources coverette spam is better than destroyers/cruisers. They have a higher evasion so tend to last a little longer and having 3 corvettes instead of 1 destroyer gives you more guns, so more damage. Weapon size only really effects range so unless you are killing everything before it gets close anyway it doesn't really matter what size guns you use.

This is very helpful, I have one fleet of 1,300 ish and a couple of 500 strength fleets. I'll build these up.

I have three colonies currently, and have maybe another 4 or 5 habitable planets within my sphere of influence. However I'm waiting on getting my tropical colonization tech as I didn't realise different worlds required different techs to let you settle them.

Seems like a few hours consolidation are required before I push into a rival's territory.

Yeah. I haven't really seen many mining tech upgrades in this game. Had 3 colonised planets, but 1 of them was only colonised around the time I was attacked so I hadn't developed it yet.

I think I brought the war and attack on myself to be honest, as I wiped out their neighbour and took over the border with their space. So they must have felt threatened.

One thing to look at is the contact for that empire. It says if they're superior, equivalent or whatever in the contacts window. And if you hover over the status, it breaks it down into navy strength, size etc...

I've done that bit, it says we're equivalent on all three counts. I'd prefer something numerical to give me an idea of exactly how close we are. Going to go into full miner/fleet production mode until I'm superior :)

Currently with two empires about to be allies, 2 empires that do not like me at all...

Well going to be messy once I got my fleet up, resources isn't a problem for me at the moment but feeling I am behind on research.

Going go down fighting though!

I need to watch some videos on how the war and combat works I think. Declared war on someone last night and couldn't see the option for "I want to destroy everything they have" so went with making them a vassel and ceding a couple of their planets that was on my border.

I went through and destroyed their fleet, landed armies on their homeworld and killed all the defenders. However I couldn't figure out a way to completely kick them off the planet and make it neutral again or put my own pop on the planet. Once I one the war they became my vassel and ceded the plants but then the ceded planets still have their people on.

I went to war last night too, it's pretty easy when you have an ally on your side :)

I think you need to have resettlement as a policy in your government settings. if you don't allow the movement of species between planets then everyone basically stays put. You can't eliminate the population of the planet you just conquered without committing genocide, so you have to gradually assimilate them and turn them over to your way of thinking. Which I imagine will require you to keep an armed presence there for some years.

Or do what I did... Turn them all into slaves.

I've explored as much as I can (I think 600 star galaxy) and blocked off by other races.

It seems I'm the largest by about a 3rd and so far no one has declared war on me.. I was tempted to start one but decided to carry on with research and boosting my income.

Now attempting to bribe the other largest race to join me but it doesn't seem to be working. Must admit.... this game is addictive...

I'm going all Culture on this one. I went to war with an Expansionist Xenophobe race on the grounds that it would give my species some focus. I'm liberating most planets but holding one to teach them a lesson :)
