SLT have asked me to look in the feasibility of installing a projector and speakers suitable for our gym. The problem is that our gym, like all gyms, has a very high ceiling and it's rented out to the public in the evenings and weekends, so the installation would have to be able to withstand a battering from footballs etc and other determined attempts of vandalism.

Before I spend any time on this does anyone have a rough idea of costs?

Thanks

You'll need a wall mounted ultra-short throw projector, with a protective cage round it.

The speakers should be rugged enough to cope with the odd ball hitting them without any protection.

Depending on the size of your hall and the size of the image you want to project, you could be looking at upwards of £700 for the projector, £200 for the amp and speakers. Then half a day installation costs (unless you are doing it yourself)

Also you need to consider what you are going to use the PA system for. Just connecting it to a PC/laptop isn't much of a problem, but if you are considering using microphones it becomes much more involved depending on what type of sounds you want to capture and amplify, positioning of speakers and mics etc...

There's a few suppliers on edugeek who would be more than happy to talk you through options I'm sure.

Give @VeryPC_Anthony_L a PM - he knows LOTS about microphones and PA setups.

I didn't install it myself but I had a company called Fabtronic Install a secure projector and amp system in our gym.

Same problems as you lettings using in the evening and weekend.

Our system was not cheap but we also need something to cope with the lighting levels in the gym which is very bright, Possible vandalism and flying balls.

For our full system including installation (very high ceiling and distance) little change from 8K the projector was nearly 3K and the cage for it was 1.5K

Hi @theo_logical

School sports halls/gyms are fun places to install an AV system. They are various various cages that can be purchased to protect equipment or depending on the height you could have it on a motorised system . Without knowing more about what you want it is hard to just give a price.

One of the biggest issues with audio is sports halls is the reverb time which affects the intelligibility of the spoken word. The main area where people start going wrong is by installing 2 big speakers and having them loud. In rooms where you have a bad reverb time it is better to install more speakers spread throughout the room at lower levels.

Generally The lighting in sports halls is rather bright so putting in a class room style projector wont be much use as it will be VERY dull. More than happy to help, feel free to PM/email me.

Anthony
