KB3148198 install fails

Got a standalone machine which repeatedly fails to install the recent KB3148198 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7). Keeps getting almost to the very end of the progress bar then fails with Error 800736b3.

 

Absolutely fine with every previous update over 5 years.

 

So far tried downloading the patch direct, System File Checker, Windows Update Troubleshooter, Windows Systems Update Readiness Tool, animal sacrifice etc etc.

 

Any ideas before I throw it off a cliff?

I had the same problem on April 30. Actually I was unable to install any of the 14 updates. I called Microsoft tech and he took over my computer, but could not fix the problem. He said he would escalate my case and someone else would call me the next day (Sunday, yesterday). Two hours later on Saturday as I was shutting down my computer I got a message that one of the updates was preparing to be installed and my computer was configuring. Sunday morning I was able to download and install all the other updates except KB 3148198.I got error code 800B0100. I told tech what happened & he said he would research it and get back to me, but I have not heard from him.

I fixed it in the end - or rather I did some more stuff and it ended up updating OK, which is not quite the same thing...

 

I suspected its *nearly* installing and then failing was something to do with its creating a restore point rather than the update itself, or something corrupted or cached in the update mechanism. So I cleared out a load of old restore points, then did a Disk Cleanup including System Files, then rebooted. Because of the Cleanup the reboot took about 30 minutes (!) with the usual "don't turn off" message, but once logged on again I was finally able to install KB3148198 with no problems.
