VMware to Hyper-V

Has anyone here moved from a VMware cluster to Hyper-V? We currently run vSphere 5.5 Essentials Plus on 3 hosts and 2 SANs, but have just acquired 2 more hosts which i'd like to use for failover. We can't add them to the Vmware cluster as 3 is the limit of hosts for Essentials Plus, so i've been thinking about maybe migrating to Hyper-V in the summer. I visited another school that a friend manages to see their Hyper-V setup and it seems pretty good, but was hoping there were people out there that have used both and can offer their experiences/suggest things to look out for or any little bits I might miss if I do move.

We migrated some of our VMware virtual servers to HyperV. We saved the VHD files and imported them onto a new HyperV host, then stopped the VMware versions and brought up the new copies for testing. Fortunately it all went smoothly and after leaving the new HyperV versions up and running for a week, we finally deleted the VMware. This is something I've done as well. I experimented with various methods but I found the "best" way was to pretend that the VMware guests were physical hosts and use the P2V mechanism inside SCVMM to handle the migration. I know that there is a V2V migration tool in there too but I found that the P2V one worked better, not that I can remember why.

We have moved a number of machines from ESXi to Hyper-V - we used to have three ESXi hosts but now just have the one. I used tools like disk2vhd and Starwind V2V Converter.

 

I still like both ecosystems, but Hyper-V allows some very cool features, and the main drive was cost - Datacentre licenses were much cheaper than VSphere!

Thanks guys, sounds like this might be worth doing then! My current plan is to set up the two spare hosts as a Hyper-V cluster along with one of the SANs, P2V the VMs over, then set the old hosts and SAN up for Hyper-v, add them into the cluster, and move some stuff back.

SCVMM would be what I would go for, but its been some time since I have had to get involved!
