Getting started with GPO for student use machines

Just starting to put together a mini-lab for students in our elementary school. This will be four Windows 7 machines bound to AD. This will also be our first usage of Windows devices for students. I was just curious if there was a list or blog that offered best practices for GPOs in a lab setting?

This guide is a good one. I have been going through this migration from Deep Freeze for the past year and there are lots of little gotchas you will run into. I'd be happy to help in any way I can.

I need to be able to set desktop icons and pin start menu programs.

You will need to look into folder redirections to do this. You can have a shared folder with the desktops icons and direct clients to that using group policy. For pinned start menu programs you will need to look at how you are going to setup users profiles as this would be held there.

 

The below article will be helpful if you are running Server 2012 R2, but would generally apply to previous versions.

Looks like from the article this is for 2012 and that there's a different process for r2.
