Online backup?

Had about enough of backup exec 2012 and its little stupid things it does. I also have an issue with a hard drive in a NAS we use. This has prompted me to think about changing to an online service.

 

What are peoples opinions? What do you use? pitfalls? stuff to watch out for etc.?

Our LEA setup online, offsite backup for our virtualised FMS server nearly two years ago. It initially used Redstore but is now using Microsoft Azure Backup.

 

I haven't had cause to use it but before doing an FMS upgrade today I did check the status of the most recent backups and all was OK. A test restore about a month ago completed without issue.

I use Redstor here and never had an issue with it, I used to work for a reseller and had to monitor the daily backups for all the schools we supplied it to and we never had an issue where data was lost for any of the schools.

redstor is quite expensive looks brilliant though. Would be 1000's cheaper to keep it in house on a NAS drive at the other end of the building (with fire break before people get carried away)

Backupexec is really old technology, there are far better options these days.

 

Veeam + azure or some other backup works very well.

I'm backing up just over 1TB (Uncompressed) via Azure which comes out at 780GB compressed (Which is what you pay for). Our first month was just over £50. I'm using the Azure Backup Server (Cut down DPM) which means I can backup locally more often through the day (Keep for 30 days on a NAS). I'm also going to backup our apps folders as well but only locally to the NAS. I currently run BE as well but Azure will replace it in time once fully setup and tested.

For us yes, we got quoted 2K a year for Redstor and that would only cover 2 servers and offered no local backup. We would need to buy another bit of software to backup our apps and ISO's etc localy.

 

Azure takes a bit of getting your head round but now I've got it setup and working it just looks after itself. I have a seperate VM running the Azure Backup Server software which means I can backup any server and resource across my domain (And domain trust, not tried it yet) and backup to our existing NAS boxes. I'm still running BE but the aim is to archive BE and move solely to Azure. One portal for all our backups.

 

Tip: Just remember to backup the DPM database as well.

Our Redstor backup costs us £880 a year and for that we get 100Gb Admin and 200Gb curriculum, we back up twice a day and can go back 60 days on our admin backup and 30 on the Curriculum. Our reseller also monitors the backups daily and lets me know if anything failed to back up due to permissions and the like.
