GrumbleDook Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 OK folks ... after taking a bashing about the NCC platform I thought it would be worth actually talking through a few concepts and ideas on Sharepoint (MOSS 2007 rather than WSS v3). If you have sharepoint (2003 or 2007) or have some experience can you reply to this thread and we can start chatting about a few things. I'll raise the first one ... when you are sharing resources do you stick everything in the top level document library or do you put it in sub-site DLs and give permissions to different groups?
john Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 mmmm SharePoint I loooove SharePoint (awaits cry of MS Fanboy) but anyway, I have a main page which is generic and has full notices on and a picture library, and from that each subject has a subsite which they manage themselves, and this allows them to organise how they like. Most commonly, a top level doc library called Year 9, and then divided up into terms, units or topics depending on the subject.
Gatt Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Started using MOSS 2007 internally at our school, and wnat to develop it further We have setup different sites for different departments, and given access accordingly, We are looking at replacing our "Pupil Shared Drive" with a Sharepoint site. Initially we created it with viewer access only, but found out that to run any of the survey options, you need to be a contributer..
john Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 For surveys and Discussion boards for students to use, we manually add the students group to the individual board library, part of the joys of hte flexible permissions it has to allow individual permissions over individual folders.

john Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 (edited) It can be disable, I have My Site and My Links turned off, it only appears for the Domain Administrators which is fine as 5 profiles won't gobble up the space that quickly, plus we don't use them Below is the info I used to disable them, I can't remember the source though, as I found it online and forgot to make a note of it so I appologise in advance for that! In order to turn off or disable the MySite or MyLinks functionality you need to be an Sharepoint administrator. Go to the Central Administration Web Page Click on the link for Shared Services Administration --If you have more than one SSP, select the one that is running the MySites functionality Under "User Profiles and My Sites" click Personalization Services Permissions Select the group you want to limit the functionality for. More than likely you will just have NTAuthority\Authenticated Users. In the next screen you will see a list of checkboxes, --To disable MySites uncheck "Create Personal Site" --To disable MyLinks uncheck "Use Personal Features" Once you find it, disabling the functionality is pretty easy, but if you are new to 2007 like I am it will take a while to find. Hopefully this will save you a few cycles. In the future, we may use it perhaps for an E-Portfolio / semi-replacement for Roaming profiles perhaps but only just started this academic year with it, so its still bedding in as it were.
