Hi folks,

I've started to get quite bad RSI (repetitive strain injury, carpal tunnel etc.) across the fingers in my right hand - no jokes please! :-)

Has anyone got any experience of mice and keyboards that helped alleviate this?

Thanks

Look into getting a vertical mouse. Some of the prices are shocking considering they are regular mice turned 90 degrees but they do work well, to stop the twist in the wrist that causes RSI.

I'd recommend a track ball and learn how to use it in the left hand. That's what I did when I was experiencing RSI, and I've never looked back. A physiotherapist told me that most people don't use their non dominant hand anywhere near enough.

There are a couple of things you can do before you even look at buying stuff in. Correct use of the keyboard and mouse will go a LONG way to helping. RSI not so much, but carpal tunnel is easy to help prevent and alleviate by not having your wrists on the surface all the time, both keyboard and mouse. A change of habit can resolve that. However, split keyboards (I will heartily recommend the MS Ergonomic 4000 keyboard) will help you type properly in the first place (by forcing the correct hands to type on the correct side of the keyboard) and the raised wristpad will let you lightly rest your wrists/palms whilst you type. Typical sponge wrist-rests and mouse pads will likely make this problem FAR worse as they invite you to keep your wrists flat to the surface.

Having had carpal tunnel and an arthritic index finger (now with a replacement knuckle joint) I have swapped to a (very expensive) 3M ergonomic (upright) mouse. It has made a huge difference and I only wish I'd done so years earlier.
