[android] Goodbye OnePlus One

After just over 18 months and a very nice honeymoon period I'm sorry to announce that I have separated from my OnePlus One.

In the early days it promised so much and delivered everything I expected it too. It had usurped my Nexus 4 and was faster, had more features and, joy of joys, was very affordable (as long as you got an invite).

Fast forwards to January this year where I had the stand staff at BETT laughing at me whilst I swore at it repeatedly as it failed to carry out the most basic of tasks such as answering and ending calls.

When answering a call the mere act of swiping the screen would have zero effect. The 'answer' icon would even move correctly but nothing would happen.

Swipe...swipe...swipe..swipe.swipe.swipeswipeswipeswipeswipe..., I'll ring them back

Ending a call was no different either. You'd pull the phone away from your ear to be greeted with a black screen which would then require unlocking (if you could get the device to wake up) all to the background sounds of the caller at the other end still on the line.

These, as well as a dozen other niggles meant enough was enough.

All of the problems I have experianced have been reported by other OPO users as well and no matter how many times I factory reset the device it soon returned to it's buggy state.

So, it's now out of the door to be replaced with a Nexus 5X which has now given me a couple of weeks of flawless stock Android goodness and my life has got just that much more stress free because of it.

This is probably the first smartphone I've had to replace early (I usually get 2.5 years out of them) due to usability issues. In the past I had some early Windows Mobile devices, a Nexus 1 and then the Nexus 4 but none of these were replaced due to problems in use but just due to age and lack of new features.

Still, lesson learnt, and there was no way I was going to spend hacking a new Android version in there to to get it to do what it was supposed to do anyway!

And breath....

Many other smartphones especially Samsung and IPhones have met with similar fate @Dos_Box

 

I still have mine although my daughter is using it in Cape Verde as I have moved on to the OP2, which has given me nearly a year of excellent service so far, I feel for the price it is still one of the best options around and I will be purchasing the next phone that this company releases.

 

I do feel that Apple having lost 17% of sales in the first quarter of this year are at a standstill and are reverting back to the smaller model to try and drum up sales and Samsung have found a good phone in their recent release but at what cost?

I could do, but I don't want teh faff. I think @ZeroHour probably will once it makes its way up to him to use for testing.

I have to say though, the Nexus 5X is a cracking phone and can be picked up for sub £200 if you shop around.

And it has marshmallow

Hmm, I have a OPO, and pretty much the first thing I did was flash it with 12.1 nightlies. Works a treat.

 

Always wanted a Nexus phone, love me some stock Android.
