UPS Network Card Install

Hi All,

 

I'm planning on installing a network card into one of our UPS's tomorrow, any helpful tips for a first timer?

They are a fairly straight forward fit just take note of the obvious like will it default to DHCP or does it start with a static IP or will you be configuring via a console cable? On the subject of cables, if you are ever using a serial cable on a UPS, do ensure it's the right one as some of them will make your UPS switch off!

It will depend on the make of the UPS but essentially, its very easy.

Yes, take notice of ChrisH's comments and work out its addressing, making sure the end result is an address on your network that is fixed and that won't be distributed by DHCP (either out of the distribution range or reserved).

Once thats sorted, get the software installed and away you go!

 

Dont forget also to configure the software to make sure things shutdown as you want them. This would depend on what you have powered through the UPS. If its servers, you want the software to initiate shutdown after a period of time before the batteries run out.

If its switches etc then i would probably look to run them for as long as you can before the batteries die!
