JamesGrP Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Hi All, Trying to put costing together for a move over to Veeam (50% virt here and expanding, bye bye BKUP EXEC!!!) blocker is costing up cloud storage, any recommendations on a provider, would rather real world rec than picking from a list of partners off the Veeam site! Kind regards James
Steve21 Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Do you actually want cloud storage? Obviously I'm assuming as you mentioned BackUp Exec that was local storage so not sure what the blocker point was referring to. (Unless I assumed wrong ) We've been pricing it up recently and seems to work out better to co-locate a server in a near centre and VPN across to it rather than paying for cloud storage if it's a fair chunk of data. JamesGrP Posted March 31, 2016 Author Posted March 31, 2016 I was thinking of a local colo too Steve but the bee is in the heads bonnet wrt cloud so I have to provide all the options. Pricing will help sway! We have two sites and infra in both so that's my main plan (2x Netapp & 2x NAS) and hopefully a new tape drive to replace the aging unused LTO3 Lib. James
PotNoodleTech Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 (edited) To be honest, if you have two sites and you mirror the backups across to both sites that's about as 99.5% disaster proof as you can get without spending silly money. I mean if you actually lost one entire site via a ginormous alien space ship attack - you'd still have all you're data safe and secure and mirrored on the other site. Exactly what kind of disaster is you're head planning to plan for??!! A nuke? You may have other things to worry about in that situation before you start logging into you're cloud to get you're data so you can immediately restore all services for the two sites that simply don't exist any more..... Let me know how you get on though - I was looking at the cloudsync page earlier in veeam and thinking... "hmmm I wonder how much it would work out". Edited March 31, 2016 by PotNoodleTech
kmount Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Treat with pinch of salt but I got some pricing back in January for this for an existing customer of ours looking at doing similar. I was working with an Edu customer on sizing out 25TB and cost on RRP was ~£1530 pcm. (no addon costs for bandwidth, flat rate on storage) (hosted in a UK DC, peered with JANET etc) Our customer decided to utilise another physical location some miles away instead.
robjduk Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 I signed up to PeaSoup via Veeam. Great service and nice pricing.
Tallwood_6 Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Veeam cloud connect on Azure should be pretty cheap given there storage costs and you can now restore veeam backups straight to Azure as well now which makes it an excellent all round DR solution. Will want to setup a site to site or point to site VPN though which is reasonably straightforward 1
JamesGrP Posted April 5, 2016 Author Posted April 5, 2016 Lots of food for thought, thanks all! Azure does look like the cheapest option - will report back how we get on.
Tallwood_6 Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 The economy of scale that Azure, and AWS can offer should make it extremely difficult for others to compete on price. I believe if you are education you can buy through the "G Cloud" procurement framework as well which will give you better pricing and also checkboxes all the security and data protection stuff without you having to lift a finger. 1
