windows media player error mms

We are trying to access clips from http://www.screenonline.org.uk for media students. We are using media player 11.

 

We ARE registered with them correctly but when we click on a link it says "windows media player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. If you typed a URL in the open url dialog box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http" or "rtsp")."

 

I have tried microsofts knowledge base and attempted to reregister wmnetmgr.dll as described but it does not help. I have checked all settings in "network" in media player even trying to explicitly add our proxy server but this does not work either. I believe this may be something outside of media player as VLC fails also.

 

Any ideas would be most appreciated..

can you post the url or urls that you get when you click on the file that is supposed to be a video file im presuming.

 

if it gives you an mms url ie

 

mms://url.something.co.uk

 

what happens if you replace mms with http, will that allow you to download the file locally ?

(actually any of the clips - but you have to have your school registered with them in order to play)

It looks as though the problem is on their end seemingly finding nothing but having spoken to them it appears to be my end. Something blocking streaming media possibly?

have you got a proxy or firewall ? or anything that may block it ?

Yes.

 

However I manually added the proxy details into media player under network to circumvent this but to no avail. Have also checked firewall logs and there is no mention...
