ful56_uk Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Morning All Got my site to site link up and running. Both sites have there own AD and the goal will be to have one AD with sub ou per school, I'm a bit confused on the steps to take next, let's call them site a and site b create forest trust first? What type of trust? Do I create a new dc on site b and make that a member of site A domain? Setup sites and services? Start the process of moving ad objects from site b ad to site a? Once all is moved over to site A break the trust, the decommission any existing servers on site b? Any advice would be great
3s-gtech Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 You'll want a two way trust. No need for sites and services until you have a single AD. Use ADMT to move users, PCs etc across from one AD to the other (it's superb). You can then switch off the DCs on the defunct domain. 1
FN-GM Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 (edited) If you want to make a trust first, make a 2 way trust and use ADMT to migrate everyone over. If you want 1 flat domain: 1. You go into sites are services. 2. Associate the appropriate subnet with the existing site (if not done so already). You can use summary addresses. 3. Create a new site for the other building and set-up the subnet for that physical location to the AD site. On the new physical location promote a DC like you normally would and during the wizzard make sure the correct AD site is selected. Personally, I would do the steps above, then make the trust, migrate over and then break the trust. It is really important that the networking side of things is perfect, The routing must be setup correctly and optimal. If not you will end up with all sorts of issues.
