Right bit of an off the cuff request from SLT here. We have had some TVs installed in each house system base location so 5 in total. Now at the moment these tvs just give the pupils key dates such as exams and what house events are coming up.

Now the idea is to show the top contributors for the week on each tv which is fair enough but here is the next big idea from SLT. What they want is lets say a tablet device next to the tv where the pupils can input there unique number which they have on there lanyards onto the touch screen and on the tv next to it will display there achievement percentages etc.

i have been asked to look into it but i am not sure.

just spitballing here if they have numbers on a lanyard could you redo than lanyards with a barcode/qr code that opens up a browser to their web page when scanned?

Don't see why not

Been thinking about this as there are a few other things to consider like how to switch the content.

I am guessing the current content is controlled by a signage player? You would need some way of telling the screen to switch the input to the tablet device or if you can to run a program on the signage player that opens a page or another and then switches back.

If your TV has RS232 control the switching could be done this way....

No idea on the technology that you would need but I would have more concerns about the intent - I'm all for 'winners' and 'losers' but I would have hated to have had any part of my academic prowess displayed on a big screen for all to laugh at! I understand achievement percentages are not a huge amount of information by themselves but this could turn out to be the thin end of the wedge...

That's the only easy way of doing this I think. You may need to use small program which listens for input from the scanner and switches the running application from the normal signage to a unique web page (do you have this data web-accessible already?), then auto-switches it back after a set amount of time.

could you just run the normal stuff like a screen saver so that after 5 mins say it just goes back to what it was doing?

You could did it as a scheduled task. That way you'd only need to get the web page to open in front of the active signage windows/fullscreen app. The task could then shut the browser. Even easier!
