SIMS & Netware

Just had a glossy presentation from SIMS - SLT seemed to be impressed.....

 

We were assured that running SIMS on a Novell Netware network was "No problem".

 

Does anyone out there have any experience which might confirm this - or otherwise?!!

From the client side, it shouldn't matter. You will need a windows server to run the sims.net server stuff on though. Clients may need a drive mapped, but that's about it. DNS entries for the server, can't think of much else it could need.

We used Novell Netware Client previously and SIMS.net was fine too!! As said before you will need Server 2003 for SIMS.net database.

Indeed, SIMS.net will run fine on a netware based network, as has been said, you will need a windows box to host the sims sql 2005 database, but the sims file directory can reside on a standard netware or nss volume. You will just need to map an appropriate drive letter - usually S so that your staff receive an S:\SIMS path (or if in Staffordshire, F:\SIMS) and then it's just a case of setting the appropriate permissions on the workstations. This assumes that your SIMS.net passwords are held within the SIMS database. If you switch to the newer domain authentication system for SIMS, you will have to ensure that all your sims users have accounts on the windows server.

We have run SIMS with Novell for about 19 years. As already mentioned SQL does not run on Novell so a Windows 2003 box is needed. We find it runs fine however when there are problems and a Novell network is mentioned that gets some very negative responses from some associated with help desks although not from the more knowledgeable.

Yes, percieved problems with SIM's and Netware are one of the trump cards that the lea ict team used to persuade the senior leadership to replace our existing network with a std CC3 system...that and we wouldn't be able to have 'full support' from them unless the network built the way 'they' do it. Ah well, the joys of retraining the staff have yet to come :-)

Exactly what our LEA did to us, 'we cant support something we dont understand' the fact that we have been running it with very little funding for the last 7 years! All of a sudden money appears and they pump it into RM CC4 because it looks pretty! Pump money into Netware and it makes the rest blush!

 

Answer to the thread...we run SIMS.net on a Netware 6.5 network for the time being and everything is fine, like mentioned before, drive needs mapping and users need setting up on the Windows box for SIMS but thats it.

I just don't tell them what sort of server files are being hosted on. It gives them an excuse for poor programming if they can blame Novell.

 

It's the same with the OES bits. Some parts of management are happy for NW users to migrate to Linux or Windows, so if asked, you are moving to Linux. Just don't mention the "add-on product".
