What software is recommended for KS3/4

I'm sitting here trying to reinvent the wheel when a brainwave came to me - ask on Edugeek!

 

My task is to build a forward plan for our small school's (KS3/4 Special for boys with Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties). I've been directed to do this starting from the user needs upward so that if necessary things can be built up from scratch with a development plan.

 

What I'm trying to establish first off is if there is any recommended software for KS3/4 secondly what others have found they need for the teaching to be carried out effectively across all subject areas.

 

Any suggestions would be massively welcome please.

If you want to engage pupils in IT, there are some very good hands on kind of things;

-Mission maker: Make your own game levels

-Minecraft for education: Can be used to push out subjects in different ways

-Kodu: Create your own games for PC and Xbox

-Scratch: Basic concept of coding

 

There are more, but those are the ones that stand out the most and seem to really engage the kids.

Only go up to half of KS3 but we use the following:

Minecraft for education

Dyslexia Screener

Various programs to help with writing and reading - Clicker, Communicate in Print, Rapid Writing, Rapid Reading
