domain.ac.uk vs www.domain.ac.uk

If someone internally visits our website without the www. they get a page cannot be displayed error.

 

This is probably down to the fact that our Active Directory domain is the same 'name' as the website name so DOMAIN.AC.UK, is there any way to configure so that people can access our website internally without the www or not?

 

(Obviously works fine externally)

You can install IIS on your DCs and redirect to www

There is a registry change which will sort DNS

If you are using IE you can change the ctrl-enter thing that adds the www. and .com to using www. and ac.uk

Tell them they have to use www

 

I have started to look at this for our website/domain as it is also going to be the same internally and externally and the below link seemed to be the most helpful thing I've found but I haven't actually followed it yet. Still researching atm although my manager is mostly in favour of the IIS on DC solution and I'm leaning towards the DNS or tell staff ones

You need to create an A record in DNS, like this example.

 

I'd suggest you make the change with your registrar rather than on your local DNS server.

Just create a new A record on your internal DNS server to the IP of the web host but without anything in the name field, just fill the IP part in.

You need to mirror your external DNS internally, it's a bit of a pain but I find it's easier than renaming your AD domain.
