Demoting file server

Hi all,

 

We have a file server that was also a DC. Due to issues we had experienced we took away the roles from it and disabled DHCP and DNS, but it is still a DC. I want to demote it from a DC just to a member server to tidy things up, but just wondering and as a precaution, this will not effect any of the file shares will it?

 

The server is the student and staff file server as well as, shared file server.

So long as your DNS is in order, and it's also worth checking the static IP configuration (if it has one) to make sure there's nothing pointing at itself, it'll be fine. Once it becomes a member server only, it'll get in line unless the issue you had previously have caused it to be extensively broken.

We would get random crashes on it, so I have taken as much off it as possible, we are looking to get a replacement in atm.
