Excel docs v slow to open

My Head and others are having an issue with excel. Files opened from within excel are fine. They open as expected but if a file is opened from the desktop or downloads etc, excel hangs for ages.

 

Win7/ Office 2016 Pro

I know this is an "old fix" for previous versions of Office, but have you tried the following:

 

Open IE -> "Tools" menu -> "Internet Options" -> "Security" tab -> "Local Intranet" -> Click on "Sites" button -> Uncheck "Automatically detect intranet network"

 

In previous version, what would happen is that even if the file was on the local machine, Office (excel, etc) would still try to scan the network...

 

Don't know if it applies to Office 2016, but mine is unticked and I can open up files without any problems (not that it helps you )

Does this effect all excel files or password protected ones in particular? I have this problem but it only happens when the spreadsheet is password protected. Will be keeping an eye on this thread to see what you guys suggest

By coincidence, I too have been advised that our users are suffering from same / similar issue with Excel 2010 (and Word 2010) whist attempting to open files located on shared drive(s). File opening times ranging from a few seconds to up to 20 minutes! (Windows 7 x64 / Office 2010 x86)

 

I also found the same potential fix as @wagnerk posted; as well as this one:

On your work computer, you might try checking the box for "Copy remotely stored files onto your computer, and update the remote file when saving" at File | Options | Advanced: Save. Then you can copy or email the locally saved copy for home use.

 

although I have not tried either yet.

 

Bit puzzled, as the Windows 7 / Office 2010 Build we use has not changed recently (or anything else infrastructure wise either!) or in a long time to be honest; only MS Updates.

 

Also read about issue could be possibly related to (redundant) network printers being connected and/or (old) network shares (but this is not applicable as everything connected / mapped is all current etc.).

 

Open to (further) suggestions!
