Sam Learning & Java Problem

I have a school that has recently had new computers. They have come to use Sam Learnign for th e first time on them and where the questions should be they get a blank white/grey area. I instantly thought it was becasue Java was not installed but it is. The only thing differnet is that these computers have IE 7 on.

 

Doeas anyoen know of any issues with Sam Learning and IE7 or any other option i have to try and solve this?

Does your school use a proxy for the internet? If so, let the student select the subject and then the area of study, but before clicking the exercise, wait around 10 seconds, and a java log-in box should appear. Enter the domain usernames and passwords and it will load properly.

 

Another option to look for is to make sure the "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy" is ticked in the IE properties.

All the options you suggested are in place.

 

When the page loads i see the java emblem, it looks like its loading the java based exercise and then you just get a white square. If you click or press space bar to activate the control nothing happens.

Oh and it works in Firefox so its obviously a IE 7 problem.

How are you instlling Java VM? And what version are you using?

We are having exactly the same problem. It seems to be since we upgraded to the latest version of Java. - is there a compatibility issue with the SAM site?

 

I haven't tried it on any other browser yet so can't comment on that bit!

After speaking to SAMLearning tech support and having a look on edugeek I've found that the problem lies with the ISA Server blocking Java.

 

I followed the instructions on An ISA server requests credentials when client computers in the same domain use Internet Explorer to access Web sites that contain Java programs and all is now ok!

Leaving the access unauthorised surely creates a security hole? Say a laptop from home running an OS like XP Home or Vista Home or any others that GP won't apply to comes into school and is plugged into the network. Its very easy to get your hands on the proxy settings, so a user can access the Internet without any authentication. One proxy site later and you could have a load of sniffers and hacking tools on your network with no accountability or tracking of who was the offender.

 

I know its all ifs and buts, i'm just looking at possibilities. Can anyone shed any more light on any other security issues regarding unauthorised access to the Internet?

Only if you don't trust the site that your allowing anonymous access to, and why would set this up if you didn't trust Sam Learning?

 

Oh, he's the squid configuration to do the same thing btw (if like us you use squid instead of ISA).

Getting the same problem here - SAM Learning is having a nightmarish time with Java

and we use Smoothwall not ISA

Do you all use a proxy to access the internet? We have had the same problem here since upgrading. We are an RM network and have been onto support to them for 22 days with no progress, finally I found the fix myself.

 

It might work for non RM as well.

 

Let me know how you access the internet and also type of network (RM or not) and I will try to help.

We have ISA 2004 and have setup a annoymous rule to all the JAVA sites the school uses, its a pain when a teacher doesn't inform us before hand of any new sites they might use, but once the site is in the rule it works fine.

If that works for you then that is ok, the problem I think I might have a fix for is if you have got a rule but still java wont do anything and you are at a loss as what to do as was I.
