Two things happened at the time of this problem starting to happen but I am struggling to find the solution. The BT internet went down so one of my fibres was out of action for a bit... and I updated Smoothwall to the new castle name thingy. When I am at home I try and connect to the school email in outlook via HTTPS... it fails... I try using OWA it fails, I can do a port scan and its working..... if I connect to 4G on my phone it connects both ways.Similar to the remote file access... works on one and not the other.I wonder who is to blame.

Have you installed Edinburgh-2?

Well you can obviously get in via your data connection on your phone so that would tell me there isnt a problem at work.

When at home and your phone is on your wifi connected to your home isp connecting into work, does it work? I'm trying to rule out your home connection.

I'm thinking its something to do with the BT issues the other day as its magically sorted itself out. Maybe a routing issue but now I can get on instantly (and quickly) to everything... well not on outlook but it might be me.

I had issues about 7 years ago which was similar which took me ages to sort out... and it was them then too.

I can understand you were a bit confused as smoothwall have pulled (so i understand) edinburgh-2. Most if the time its a problem with the ISP and i guess it was just bad timing.

Glad to hear everything is ok now.

just got back from my moms where I could connect fine but the member of staff is still not able to connect... so its either a routing issue with BT (stranger things have happened) or the SW box is not port forwarding right for some external addresses (stranger things have happened)Might have to remote in to have a look.

Its still weird. I connected last night to my outlook using 443 and it was very sluggish and kept freezing. Then all of a sudden it said it lost connection.. I had a RDP connection open also and checked the smoothwall but couldnt see an error.

I am still having major issues with this and SW haven't figured anything out yet, they've said its not the SW box.

So I am sat at home and using my laptop on my broadband I get through to 1 of my internal servers but it wont go through to the other 1.

I switch to 4G on my phone and it works fine

Looking at the SW logs they show the connection being accepted on the SW box on all ports.

I have moved the hyper-v network sockets around to test, taken off the IDS on the SW.. even purchased new static IP addresses and swapped the port forwarding to a totally different external line.

Pulling my hair out now.

I did a straw poll and its 50/50.. some can use it, others can't get on.

Could it be the ISP? I had an issue many years ago where talktalk blocked my connection to work so ended up using teamviewer for everything. I literally couldnt access my servers on my public IPs.

Its BT, managed to mess a switch firmware upgrade up last night so got in at 6.30 to fix that... now my exchange server isn't sending out external emails its getting.. so I am on a lovely long call to M$. I know I have a Yorkshire accent but do I need to repeat myself 4 times :)

Which MS country are you calling? Surely its not the british one.

I switched away from Zen as they were messing up mail to BT so I've had issues before like this.

I think its a SW issue. I've exhausted every other possibility but they say the Edinburgh update didn't touch any of the networking.

I fixed my SMTP traffic issue this morning by removing logging and IDS on the port forwarding rule (IDS wasn't even enabled on the ports) and SMTP traffic magically appeared. It stopped again so I removed the rest of the loggings on the ports (didn't remove them over the years after logging) and SMTP is working. I've not touched Exchange when this happened.

Its a huge coinkydink to me.

What about jumping on the Framlingham release early program at smoothwall.io to see if that fixes any issues.

Bit iffy after what Edinburgh did to BYOD on the early release. They have tweaked the timeout on connection tracking" and "syn-backlog remotely so will check tonight if stuff works from home. I don't think they believe me.

Okay so I am really really stuck now.

I have just reinstalled my Smoothie from scratch as I was convinced something was going funny with it... restored the config from a backup and the same thing is happening.

I have a IIS server with a simple 443 port forward... works perfectly every time

I have a OWA server... works if I reboot the exchange box but fails over time

I have a Guacamole server... doesn't work at all

I have a web server running on a QNAP box.. doesn't work

If I switch from my WIFI to 4G then it works.

This points to my WIFI being the issue but there are a lot of my users having similar issues.

When I look at my SW logs I can see the connection opening and working, there is no rhyme or reason that I can see.

I had a brainwave it might be my Hyper-V server.. but QNAP isn't running on that.

SW are saying its not them

I still think its the ISP at home premises rather than work. I remember having an issue with talktalk routing. It suddenly stopped working. Numerous phone calls to TalkTalk, lots of traceroutes to them and they couldnt understand what was happening. In the end we left and went to plus.net where the problem disappeared... coinsidence??

Problem is I cant ask the users to change ISP. I have collected their IP's so might be able to find out their ISPs and see if there is a pattern.

That is true but is the problem with ALL users or just some? Would be interesting to see the analysis to see if itbdoes point to one or a group of ISPs that use the same infrastructure.

Sounds kinda simliar to an issue here. Users with TalkTalk lines can't use our SSL VPN or DirectAccess. Everyone else is fine.

Sorry not helpful but it does sound like ISP issue (routing?).
