gerardsweeney Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Hello, all.. This is probably some GPO setting long since inherited from our XP days, but I'm running on empty time and inclination wise Staff login on Windows 7. They can click on Start, then type in the "Search programs and files" box for (say) Word and they'll see Microsoft Word amongst others. Pupils do the same, they don't see any of the Programs at all. Can someone put me out of my misery about what setting needs tweaked?
FN-GM Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 If you have the group policy that restricts access to the C drive set it will break the search.
Arthur Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Is the pupils AppData folder redirected to the network?
halbaradkenafin Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Do you have redirected start menus? If so then they need slightly more permissions to the share that it's on.
JoeFulford Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 I just allow Full Control on the Redirected Start Menu share for the students and then Run and Execute on NTFS. This allows them to search correctly for me.
Guest WMITTech Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Giving them full control of the start menu is a bad idea! Either a group policy that redirects or a login script.
Michael Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 You could argue, if all applications are there on a controlled/redirected Start Menu and/or Desktop, there's no requirement to search for applications. Putting a shortcut to Word directly on the Desktop must be the easier/better option surely?
Guest WMITTech Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Or having common programs on desktop, like word, excel, Adobe etc
gerardsweeney Posted February 26, 2016 Author Posted February 26, 2016 All.. Sorry for the delay in replying. No redirected start menu/desktop/startup. Nothing funky done to NTFS. From memory (I'm at home just now), we used to hide C: drive with 2 different GPO settings - one hides C: with drive calculator derived setting and the other was added because they could just type C:\windows in the address bar to get them access in days of olde. I'll have a trawl through to see if we're still using both. Cheers, Gerard
gerardsweeney Posted May 6, 2016 Author Posted May 6, 2016 A tad late to the party.. It's the "NoViewOnDrives" registry key that kills it. Which is a bugger, as I have that in tandem with "NoDrives" to stop pupils from simply typing "C:" in the address bar, and being able to see everything. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "nodrives"=dword:4 "NoViewOnDrive"=dword:4 NoDrives hides drive C but NoViewOnDrive stops them from just putting C: in the address bar. How do you boys and girls manage this situation?
