MatthewL Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Got an 8 year old Acer Aspire laptop that appears to have a screen that has failed. You get a slight flick as you boot up and then its just a white light along the bottom. Plug in an external monitor and its fine. Do I replace the screen or should I be looking at the inverter panel? My gut says screen but don't want to order it up and it not be that. I'm sure I've had the same issue on a similar model laptop a few years back and that was a screen swap as the laptop has been dropped. There is a slight crack on this case but cannot prove its been dropped and highly doubt it due to where its come from. I've not stripped it down to reseat any cables but before I do that I'm feeling the screens gone, its just that long since I've anything in like this I am starting to doubt myself a bit. Thoughts please. Thanks
twin--turbo Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 most LCD's use one of a few standard connectors. So if you have anything else kicking arround it may be worth opening up a few and comparing connections. Often it is just a cable reseat though, or perhaps the cable has got damaged. Do you get any boot logo? With a failed backlight you should be able to just make out the login box. one tip for anyone reading... If it's an LED screen, remove PSU and Battery and discharge the laptop as the chance of popping the micro fuse to the LED backlight is high! TT
difinity Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 (edited) If the screen is lighting, then it's not the inverter. I've done an Acer in the past where the cable had worked loose on the back of the panel. Edited January 27, 2016 by difinity
twin--turbo Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Post up the P/N of the screen.. Someone may randomly have one. TT
MatthewL Posted January 27, 2016 Author Posted January 27, 2016 I'll get my tools out and get it opened up on Friday and check it all, I've got nothing around any more like that at home, only got the odd box of cable used most of it up and no longer work anywhere where we scrapped bits like that I could use. It has no HDD in so only posts, you just get the bottom bit saying press ESC to go into boot for around 5 seconds. Laptop model is Acer Aspire 5735Z I just eBay that for a LCD, about £30-40. Might pop in to local PC shop they are reasonable and might have the odd screen in. Cheers for your help will give it ago when I get 5 this week.
dapaulio Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Does it flicker more when you move the screen up and down. Most cases like this are resolve with a replacement screen. Ebay for a replacement, 20 minutes work and you may get biscuits as payment for saving the member of staff life 😃
MatthewL Posted January 27, 2016 Author Posted January 27, 2016 No change when moving screen. I can get into bios but via external screen. Just a job for a friend at home, reinstalled Windows on one laptop as this one failed someone quoted him £150 to replace screen when I can do it at fraction so only getting it sorted as a spare laptop for him.
