I've heard that i can downgrade from VHB to XP Pro with no other license agreement, or cost... at least thats what the HP said when i phoned up about a £239 laptop i just bought.

 

Is this marvelous fact true???

 

I know im allowed to "downgrade" form XP Pro to Linux

Vista Ultimate

If that were true, you'd have a real bargain on your hands! Vista Home Basic is absolutely awful. I'd never recommend that to anyone for the sake of £10 where you can buy Vista Home Premium!

 

With Vista Home Basic you 'should' be able to downgrade to XP Home not Pro. As FN-Greatermanchester mentioned though, running Vista Business, Ultimate or Enterprise would qualify for XP Pro. They're all domain compatible Operating Systems.

That's not 100% correct - you can downgrade from any version of Vista if you are prepared to pay for an XP licence, but only the versions of Vista that FN-Greatermanchester lists are eligible for a free downgrade licence.

Incidentally, for school use, does anyone know if buying the Schools Agreement Volume Licence for XP Pro Upgrade is a legal way to get XP onto such a machine? I've only ever seen a requirement stated for an OEM Windows licence, not specifically for an older or less capable version?
