Looking at Network storge and to back up Hyper-vs

Hi, Our server space is starting to run out and i was thinking of getting a good rackmouted Netowrk strage to use to copy the data on and to abck up Hyper -v VMS as then i can look to upgrade our servers to 2012 and not worry about the data.

 

I was after advise, ideas and best way to implament it. IE use it as one whoel drive or partition it? What Raid to use?

 

I was looking at the -Synology RackStation ​RS815RP+ and about 4TB

Just had a look at the Synology ​RS815RP+ and looks good on specs. Personally I would suggest to have it in raid 6 ideally. This would mean drive wise you would need 4x 2TB drives to achieve 4TBs of storage. It is worth to note that the larger the drives the longer it will take to rebuild if a drive fails.

I don’t just want to just add more stage and then that it I would like to have a fail over and less worry and stress for me if a server crashed or hardware fail and everything else would carry on working? Cloud servers?

 

Thanks’ for the feedback. I am looking into ways that i can increase our data but then also have a backup of our server i.e. replication so i 1 hardware failed it would fail over to the hyper-v running on this.

I am look at the best and most cost affected way as I won’t get to do this again probably for another 3-5 years after this lol

I am looking at option on having cloud servers and local network storage replicated? I don’t know to much about cloud servers and how they would work but I know they would have replication and backs which would mean less for me to worry about at school and then can help Teach ICT

Wouldn't bother with cloud solutions unless you got lots of on-going money

 

If all you want is a "oh crap" kinda setup why not just get one server, filled it with RAM/Storage and use something like Veeam (or other product) to replicate VMs over

 

That way if something breaks all you need to do is walk to other server, start VM and boom back online

Synology boxes are great. Our solution is one in the server room and one in a far off, separate building cab. Veeam then backups up to the server room box and then does a background copy to the far flung box. Instant offsite storage.

 

I'm not sure I fully understand what you want but I would go with RAID just because you don't want to lose all your backups just because one disk gets the wobbles.

We have a very similar setup to @TechMonkey but we use Buffalo NAS devices, one in the server room, one in another building. We use Altaro backup software to backup the VMs to the nearest NAS device, then take an offsite copy to the NAS device in the other building.

 

From what you describe it sounds like you want a host server running Hyper-V with all your current servers running as VMs, then a second 'failover' server ready to take over in case of a hardware failure on the first server.

Hi Thanks for all the reply’s and ideas.

Hallb15 that was one of my ideas that i was looking at was failover over using Hyper-V replication and when i was reading up on the synology it says it supports Hyper-V replication so was seeing if that would be able to run while the hardware got repaired.

I am not sure if I am looking at this the correct why or trying to replicate servers or should look at the suggestions of using something like Veeam to back them up. WOuld prefer to use Hyper-v Replication as it is free if it can be done a device like the synology?

At the moment have 2 physical servers running 2008r2 but would like to upgrade to 2012 and convert to Hyper-V on the physical boxes so then nothing is hardware depend and can get up and running if hardware failure.

 

And also increase our disk space as our school has expanded now with more class and teachers need more disk storage to but i am looking at everything?

 

Hope that makes any sense? I am looking to upgrade storagee and maybe servers to Hyper-V and back up to something like a Synology RackStation ​RS815RP+ or a storage server depending on price

We have Hyper-V cluster using 2 x RS3614xs+ which are setup as failover with active heartbeat as the storage units, they have a mixture of SSDs (For superfast caching) and SATA drives (For 24TB storage) these are coupled to 2 x Dell R710's with 196GB RAM in each as the Hyper-V hosts using 2 x GB unmanaged switches for failover.
